Position Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Field Services, the Shop Mechanic is responsible for performing or organizing the mechanical repair and maintenance of the MD Fleet (vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment). The employee would ideally have a Class 3 License and be able to operate heavy equipment or trucks if required. The employee would ideally have supervisory background.
Specific Accountabilities
- Assist with the planning and organizing of the functions and activities related to the servicing, maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment in order to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable and safe to operate
- Determine the nature and extent of repairs and maintenance needed and complete in house or schedule with off-site vendors
- Analyze, troubleshoot, dismantle, align, assemble and adjust mechanical equipment and machinery to maintain it in efficient operating condition
- Assist in Fleet Management
- Install new and added-on equipment and modifications on equipment and vehicles
- Test repaired equipment for proper operation
- Advise supervisor of any serious mechanical or safety issues
- Monitor parts usage and report on any materials issues or purchasing requirements. Assist in ordering replacement equipment, parts and supplies
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding, flame-cutting, brazing and soldering equipment
- Keep detailed and accurate maintenance records and documentation
- Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the shop and ensure shop policies are adhered to
- Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
- Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to OH&S and MD safety procedures and program
- Perform in a team environment with minimal supervision
- When required, operate heavy equipment and trucks
- Perform other duties as required

Able to lead a Level II Mechanic
Mentoring summer and RAP students
Education and Certifications
- High school diploma Required
- Certified Mechanic License Required
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License Required
- Alberta Class 1 or 3 Drivers License with Air Brake Endorsement Preferred
Abilities and Experience
- Proven mechanical abilities in gas and diesel automotive repairs and heavy equipment repairs Required
- Must be physically fit and able to do heavy lifting work Required
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office programs, with the ability to independently create and edit a variety of documents and spreadsheets Required
- Experience with GIS systems Asset
- Experience with Digital work order systems like Asset Management - Required
- Excellent social, communication, and relationship management skills Required
- Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team Required
- Must be organized and pay strong attention to detail Required
- Able to always deal with people tactfully and professionally Required
