Overview
The Senior Substation Engineer provides technical leadership, expert guidance, and mentorship across all substation engineering projects. This role ensures that high-quality, accurate, and constructible design packages are delivered on schedule to customers or project teams. Acting as a trusted subject matter expert, the Senior Substation Engineer resolves design challenges, field-level questions, and supports project execution from concept through completion.

Working closely with project management, this position is accountable for the accuracy of designs, calculations, estimates, and proposals, ensuring projects remain profitable and are delivered on time. The role also requires strong collaboration with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders to progress designs through every project stage.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight, expert advice, and mentorship to the Substation Engineering team.

• Ensure timely delivery of high-quality substation design packages to clients and project teams.

• Support field-level inquiries and resolve design-related issues during project execution.

• Lead the preparation of accurate designs, calculations, estimates, and bid proposals for substation projects of varying scale.

• Contribute to proposal development, cost estimating, and material take-offs, ensuring the accuracy of quoted work.

• Collaborate effectively with project management to maintain profitability and schedule adherence.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, utilities, and regulatory authorities.

• Promote continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and professional development within the engineering team.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA.

Experience

• 8+ years of electrical engineering experience, including extensive work in substation design, cost estimating, and project management.

• Proven expertise in utility-specific substation projects.

• Knowledge of substation studies and design for renewable energy projects (wind, solar, BESS) considered an asset.

• Familiarity with protection & control, maintenance practices, and operational procedures is an advantage.

• Advanced ability to manage multiple projects, proposals, and designs simultaneously.

• Deep technical expertise in high-voltage design, construction, and relevant electrical codes and standards.
