The Role

CanREA's Vice President of Communications and Marketing is an executive leader responsible for developing and executing strategic communications to advance the national organization's mission to drive renewable energy and energy storage development in Canada.

Primary Responsibilities

Executive leadership & strategic direction

• Contribute strategic communications perspective to organizational decisions

• Partner with fellow leaders to develop integrated communications strategies with clear alignment to business objectives and meaningful outcomes

• Provide counsel regarding reputation management, stakeholder positioning, and crisis communications

• Lead cross-functional partnerships with Public Affairs, Policy, Membership and Business Development and Events teams

Team leadership & development

• Develop high-performing strategic Communications team, with clear expectations for quality, accountability and collaboration

• Coach and mentor to advance capabilities in communication planning, stakeholder segmentation, emerging AI applications, and ever-evolving communication practices

• Continue to evolve team roles and build capacity to align with CanREA priorities

• Foster culture of creativity, continuous improvement and results-driven performance

Strategic planning & infrastructure

• Lead sophisticated stakeholder segmentation to enable targeted engagement

• Refresh KPIs and measurement frameworks demonstrating communications impact

• Mature communications infrastructure across the organization including message frameworks, content libraries, and quality standards

• Evaluate and implement emerging technologies including AI tools to enhance efficiency, personalization and impact of communications program

Media relations

• Execute expanded media and public affairs program positioning CanREA as trusted voice of Canadian renewable energy within and beyond industry

• Increase connections with national and regional media, influencers, and opinion leaders

• Design proactive media strategy to secure strategic coverage on priority issues nationally and regionally

• Collaborate with executives to continually align communications with advocacy priorities

Digital strategy & stakeholder engagement

• Advance comprehensive digital communications program across all platforms with targeted content for segmented audiences

• Design stakeholder engagement to build strategic relationships and influence

• Develop partnerships with aligned organizations to amplify reach and impact

Brand stewardship & marketing communications

• Grow CanREA reputation and brand within and beyond renewable energy and energy storage sector

• Develop and execute marketing communications plans across all channels to support revenue growth and membership engagement, aligned with business development goals

• Collaborate with product and sales teams to support lead generation and conversion

• Analyze market trends, customer behaviour and competitive positioning

• Oversee communications and marketing strategies for Electricity Transformation Canada conference and CanREA events throughout the year

• Champion brand consistency and bilingual communications excellence


Qualifications

• University degree in communications or related field; master's degree is an asset; equivalent experience will be considered

• 15+ years progressive experience in strategic communications with 10+ years in leadership roles

• Executive leadership experience with strategic influence over organizational direction

• Track record of advancing team through coaching and development

• Deep expertise in media relations and public affairs with proven ability to secure mainstream coverage on complex issues

• Proven ability to evaluate and integrate emerging technologies, including AI, that advance communications impact and team performance

• Stakeholder engagement experience including segmentation and multi-channel strategies

• Solid digital communications knowledge, including management of website development / optimization and leveraging social media

• Confidence to lead crisis communications and strategic team planning

• Exceptional writing capabilities

• Energy sector or complex policy environment experience strongly preferred

• Working knowledge of French is an asset


Additional Requirements

• Flexible hours to accommodate periodic time-sensitive work across Canadian time zones; also, evenings or weekends during peak periods

• Periodic travel a few times per year across Canada
