ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Geotechnical & Foundations Technical Specialist, you will play a critical role in shaping the success of the ECWE project by providing expert guidance on ground conditions and foundation systems. Reporting to the Technical Lead, you will lead geotechnical investigation programs during the Development Phase, including borehole drilling, sampling, laboratory testing, and establishing geotechnical baselines. Your insights will inform foundation design and help mitigate technical risks early in the process.
In the Construction Phase, you will act as a trusted technical advisor, ensuring excavation, shoring, dewatering, and foundation installation align with design assumptions and project standards. Collaboration is key—you will work closely with design consultants, construction teams, Project Co representatives, and stakeholders to maintain safety, efficiency, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle. This position demands strong technical acumen, proactive risk management, and the ability to integrate geotechnical considerations into complex, multidisciplinary designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that construction activities comply with design specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards. Review instrumentation and monitoring data (incl. inclinometers, BMPs, tunnel monitoring instruments, piezometers, strain gauges etc.) and actions when thresholds are exceeded.
- Support planning, execution, and technical review of geotechnical investigations, including borehole logging, sampling programs, soil/rock classification, groundwater assessments, and laboratory testing.
- Coordinate foundation design interfaces (e.g., SOE systems, piles, caissons, micropiles, tiebacks, dewatering systems, footings) between design teams, technical disciplines, and construction personnel.
- Review geotechnical and foundation design documents, drawings, reports, and criteria to ensure compliance with project requirements, standards, and design progression milestones
- Provide senior level technical guidance to internal teams and subcontractors regarding subsurface conditions, excavation strategies, foundation systems, and geotechnical risk mitigation.
- Support development of Geotechnical Baseline Reports and participate in risk and design workshops.
- Ensure alignment between design assumptions and field conditions through participation in excavation reviews, subgrade inspections, monitoring programs, and technical assessments.
- Identify deviations from geotechnical or foundation requirements and recommend corrective actions or alternative solutions.
- Participate in NCR resolution for geotechnical and foundation works.
- Collaborate closely with the Construction Manager to ensure constructability, safety, and efficiency of excavation, shoring, and foundation works.
- Maintain thorough technical documentation, including inspection logs, technical reviews, monitoring data summaries, and compliance reports. Review Monitoring Installation plans and coordinate client approvals (including approvals required for third-party assets).
- Interface with geotechnical consultants, civil/structural designers, testing laboratories, and construction teams to ensure proper integration of technical requirements across project phases.
- Support implementation of Safety, Quality, and Environmental procedures related to geotechnical hazards, deep excavations, and foundation works.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills, with the ability to interpret geotechnical data and provide practical recommendations.
- Experience in transit, underground works, major civil structures, or station environments is considered an asset.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with design consultants, contractors, testing labs, and internal teams.
- Strong technical judgment, risk awareness, and problem-solving capabilities with a focus on constructability and compliance.
- Strong understanding of design–construction integration, technical interface management, and multidisciplinary coordination.
Education and Experience
- Preferred 5–10 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, foundation design, heavy civil construction, or transit infrastructure projects.
- Experience with geotechnical investigation programs, excavation support systems, deep foundations, dewatering, soil/rock characterization, and subgrade verification.
- Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil, or Geological Engineering; P.Eng designation is an asset but not required if strong experience is demonstrated.
