ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Geotechnical Engineer Lead, you will play a critical role in guiding geotechnical investigations and ensuring the integrity of ground-related aspects throughout the project lifecycle. You will provide expert advice on soil and rock conditions, lead monitoring of geotechnical parameters, and collaborate closely with design and construction teams to maintain safety and compliance. This position demands strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to make informed decisions that support project success.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate geotechnical investigations and assessments for infrastructure projects, including organizing soil sampling, borehole logging, laboratory testing, and site visits.
- Assist in implementing geotechnical monitoring programs, tracking soil stability, foundation behavior, groundwater conditions, and ground movements during construction.
- Collect and compile data from geotechnical instruments (e.g., piezometers, inclinometers, settlement gauges) and prepare accurate reports for project teams.
- Support senior engineers by maintaining documentation, ensuring best practices are followed, and facilitating communication across teams.
- Help identify potential geotechnical risks by gathering information and assisting with risk assessment processes.
- Provide administrative and technical support for developing solutions and recommendations to address geotechnical challenges.
- Coordinate with construction teams, project managers, and engineers to ensure timely sharing of geotechnical information and compliance with design specifications.
- Prepare and organize geotechnical reports, including site investigation summaries, lab results, and monitoring updates.
- Assist in implementing quality control procedures to meet project specifications, regulatory standards, and environmental guidelines.
- Act as a point of contact for routine geotechnical inquiries, ensuring clear communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Track geotechnical activities against project schedules and budgets, reporting progress to the project team.
- Support compliance with safety, regulatory, and environmental standards in all geotechnical activities.
- Participate in site inspections and assist with ground condition assessments during construction.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic understanding of geotechnical principles, soil testing methods, and monitoring instruments.
- Strong organizational skills to coordinate field activities, schedule testing, and maintain accurate documentation.
- Clear written and verbal communication for preparing reports and liaising with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders.
- High attention to detail for reviewing data and ensuring accuracy in reports and compliance with standards.
- Ability to assist in identifying potential issues and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite; experience with geotechnical data software is an asset.
- Comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment and supporting senior engineers.
Education and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
- 2–4 years of experience in geotechnical coordination or related construction/engineering support roles.
- Experience with site investigations, data collection, and report preparation preferred.
- Safety training (e.g., WHMIS, First Aid) and familiarity with regulatory standards is an asset.
