Black & McDonald is actively seeking an experienced Utilities Estimator to join our Alberta team. Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the ideal candidate brings a proven track record of accurately estimating and delivering utility projects across diverse scopes and conditions. You will lead cost estimating and electrical work take-offs for utility projects, manage tendering processes, coordinate proposals, mentor junior estimators, and oversee project planning and risk analysis. You will also support procurement activities, work with estimating systems, and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across Western Canada.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare detailed electrical and civil work take-offs and cost estimates, including conceptual budgets based on drawings, specifications, bids, and limited data.
- Lead and mentor junior estimators by assigning responsibilities and supporting professional development.
- Review project scope and specifications, analyze alternative methods, and assess risk magnitude to ensure cost-effective solutions.
- Manage estimating resources, including personnel and software, across Bid-Build and Design-Build project formats.
- Advise on tendering procedures, conduct bid analysis and negotiations, and recommend award decisions.
- Coordinate technical proposal inputs with the Marketing Department and oversee the review of specialty contractor bids.
- Establish and maintain tendering processes, including cost monitoring and reporting systems.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, design teams, contractors, suppliers, and user groups to support project success.
- Conduct procurement for secured projects and maintain supplier, contractor, and subcontractor directories.
- Maintain estimating databases (e.g., Bid2Win, Accubid), participate in site visits and project hand-offs, and perform other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION and WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 5 years Estimating experience in Utility construction projects; experience in transportation (traffic signals and streetlighting) and underground/overhead utilities is considered an asset.
- Degree or diploma in Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Electrical trade school
- Certifications and designations such as P.Eng., Electrical trades background, Gold Seal Certified (GSC), Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS), and Project Management Professional (PMP) are considered assets.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrates a high level of thoroughness and attention to detail in all aspects of estimating and project coordination.
- Combines creativity with strong analytical thinking to develop effective and efficient estimating solutions
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project), and estimating software such as Accubid or Bid2Win
- This position is based in our Leduc office and is responsible for estimating projects across Western Canada. Occasional travel to project sites may be required. Candidates must provide a valid and acceptable Driver's Abstract.
