Summary

St. Margarets School (SMS) is Western Canadas only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and WSNE Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 712). St. Margarets School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Program.

St. Margarets School is seeking a dynamic and experienced Kitchen Cook for our very busy Dining Hall, working as part of a team of dedicated individuals whose combined focus is to provide a variety of healthy and tasty meals for the SMS community.

This is a very important role within the culinary team at St. Margarets School. Working closely with the Kitchen Manager, each cook develops menu plans, tracks the use of supplies and produce ensuring timely re-stocking of needed items.

You will also oversee the Food Services Assistants preparation of foods in accordance with generally prescribed standards and have considerable independence in actual food preparation, yet also work as part of a unit to ensure the food served at each meal is balanced nutritionally, flavours are unified, and that each meal prepared meets the correct amount needed for each meal serving.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares and cooks a variety of entrees, soups, sauces, vegetables and other foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner for students, staff, and visitors
  • Bakes a variety of products such as cookies, squares, pies, cakes, bread, and buns
  • Anticipates and performs preparatory work for the meals of the day and for following days
  • Operates food production equipment such as mixers, ovens, choppers, slicers, shredders, steamers, grills, grinders, steam kettles, fryers, and broilers
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining kitchen, storage areas, equipment, utensils, and knives
  • Menu planning in conjunction with the Food Service Director
  • Prepares meals as per the menu
  • Prepares catering items for the school during special events
  • Assists with serving meals and replenishes hot/cold food items as needed
  • Ensures that the kitchen and dining areas are kept clean by storing supplies, cleaning the steam line, clean machines after each use, wash floors, checks all other areas for cleanliness
  • Assists with any school functions which require the serving of food such as staff meetings or events
  • Ensure the food served meets all dietary needs and is aware of all or any food allergies
  • Performs related duties as required

Required Education & Experience

  • Successful completion of a Red Seal cooking program preferred
  • Minimum 2 years demonstrated experience in a Cook position
  • Level 1 and 11 Food Safe Certificates
  • Grade 12; Level 3 Cooks Certificate (10 months)

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knife skills
  • Understanding recipes and their variations to enhance taste and food presentation
  • Availability for morning, afternoon, and weekend shifts
  • Ability to undertake independence of action in determining the quality/quantity of food to make and in providing variations of recipes
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize various kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Manual dexterity required to use kitchen tools and machines
  • Ability to speak and read English and communicate effectively
  • Ability to work collaborative as a member of a team
  • Able to take direction; and also work independently as well as a member of a team
  • Ability to establish good relationships and interact positively with all staff, faculty, and students

Work Conditions

  • Fast paced environment
  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and lifting.
  • Must be able to properly lift and carry objects weighing 20 pounds or less, frequently; 35 pounds or less, occasionally; and 50 pounds or more, rarely; with the highest point of any lift being overhead and the lowest point of any lift being the floor
  • Must be able to sit, stand or walk four hours continuously, up to eight hours per day, and able to remain on feet for entire shift.
  • Repetitive movements while performing duties including the ability to push/pull objects with moderate effort occasionally.
