Established in October 2019, Atura Power operates the largest, most efficient gas-fired fleet in Ontario. It represents 10% of Ontario's total dispatchable fleet and is 100% contracted with Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), with 2,744 megawatts of capacity. Atura Power uses modern technology to utilize natural gas as efficiently as possible, emitting up to 60% less carbon and fewer air pollutants compared to other fossil fuels. It plays a key role in Ontarios electricity system and diverse generation supply.
Atura Power is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, with 200 employees across Ontario. It currently operates four efficient, modern natural gas generating stations in Ontario.
POSITION:
Energy Manager/Real Time Trader (Electricity & Gas Markets)
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Commercial Manager, the Energy Manager/Real Time Trader (Electricity & Gas Markets) is accountable for executing the commercial strategy in real-time with respect to both electricity and gas market aspects of the Atura Power fleet in accordance with approved policies, budgets and business plans.
Duties will include:
Offering of available generating capacity into the IESO market, subject to plant operating and dispatch constraints and market conditions, interacting closely with operating and maintenance staff;
Purchase and sale of large quantities of natural gas to fuel the facilities;
Managing the delivery and balancing of natural gas supply using a suite of available transportation, distribution, storage, and balancing services;
Working closely with plant operations and maintenance departments on all aspects of commercial operations and on coordination of dispatch activity;
Providing real-time market analysis to assist in the development of daily and longer-term asset optimization strategies;
Ensuring full compliance with IESO market rules, regulatory requirements, and risk policies;
Interfacing with IESO to manage market rules and regulatory compliance, settlements verification and participation in IESO stakeholder events;
Maintaining daily logs to ensure gas and power commercial activities in relation to IESO contract obligations and the electricity market are documented and correct; and
Participating in and supporting various projects to facilitate commercial operations including spreadsheet and software tool development and performing analysis.

WAGE:
CAD 104,600 to CAD 110,000 per year based on 40 hours/ week. Eligibility for annual salary increase and performance-based bonus.

EDUCATION:
Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Finance or Engineering
EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum two years of experience in gas and power markets;
Familiarity with energy trading systems or platforms (ISO systems, Enerline, ICE);
Understanding of the Ontario Electricity Market administered by the IESO, from the perspective of a power generator, including:
o Market participation through offering, scheduling, and dispatch
o IESO market rules
o Settlements of IESO market and contract revenues and production
Understanding of the natural gas market in Ontario, from the perspective of gas fired generators, including:
o Purchase and sale of large quantities of natural gas on a daily basis, including deal capture and settlements with NGX and gas suppliers;
o Scheduling and nomination of gas into and out of storage and balancing accounts to manage supply and consumption
Experience as a global trader with expertise in commodity and power markets serving major consumption regions;
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data management and software tools to support commercial activities (VBA, SQL).
