Candidates must possess a Fourth Class Inter-Provincial Engineering Certificate or must be able to acquire your 4th class certification prior to the start of your work term. Currently enrolled as a 1st year student.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Operations Technician on shift and carry out various plant operations duties as assigned, with safety always being the number one priority. As part of an Operations and Maintenance team the incumbent is expected to contribute to the overall success of the plant by performing operations, preventive and corrective maintenance tasks. This position calls for a self-motivated, hands-on team player with strong mechanical aptitude and communication skills.

Reporting to the Operations Coordinator, the incumbent will work within the NAES Operations Technician team environment at one of the following NAES operated facilities:

  • Shepard Energy Centre
  • Calgary Energy Centre
  • Cavalier Energy Centre


Responsibilities

  • Overall safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power generating facility under the direction of the Operations Technician on shift
  • Adhere to worker protection procedures (Safe Work, Hot Work, Lockout Tagout, Confined Space) and Operations procedures
  • Clearly and effectively communicate with operations, maintenance, and management staff
  • Achieve targets through innovation and continuous improvement
  • Complete necessary safety training, orientation and qualifications which includes performing:
    • operational rounds on systems and equipment, informing shift engineer of abnormalities and entering work orders
    • water testing and analysis
    • unloading chemicals safely utilizing procedures and forms
    • maintaining a safe, clean and hazard free working environment
  • There may be opportunity to assist various trades - electrical, instrumentation, mechanical and operations, as the needs arise
  • Willingness to work extra hours is required.

Qualifications

Only students from the Power Engineering Program will be considered for this position

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and 18 years of age
  • This is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to the relevant requirements of the NAES Canada Alcohol and Drug policy which includes pre-assignment testing
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license
  • Please note, all plant locations are outside city limits and require personal vehicle transportation to and from the plants and possibly between sites based on business needs.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Must be able to work independently when required
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with small machinery would be an asset
  • 4th Class Pwr Eng Cert-CA required prior to start date.
  • Proof of ABSA certification must be submitted prior to starting.

Successful completion of a medical and background check is a required.

Although we appreciate your interest, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Relocation costs will not be considered for this term. The length of the assignment is based on the successful student's return to school date. Proof of registration in post-secondary may be required.
