Title: Principal Electrical Engineer (Substations)
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Hire Type: Direct Hire
Salary: $80K–$150K CAD/YR

Sterling Engineering is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our team in Calgary to support the substation layouts design group. This is a hands-on, dynamic role where you'll lead technical designs, manage projects, and mentor junior engineers while working on high-voltage utility projects.
Job Duties:
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to the substation layouts design team.
  • Review team workload, forecast future resource needs, and ensure projects are staffed appropriately.
  • Manage engineering-only projects, track progress, and ensure budgets and schedules are met.
  • Provide weekly updates to senior management on project status, budgets, and resourcing.
  • Mentor new hires and junior engineers, providing on-the-job training.
  • Maintain knowledge of client and industry standards.
  • Review and approve project designs, perform quality checks, and complete complex engineering designs as needed.
  • Develop major equipment specifications (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, GIS) and engage vendors for procurement.
  • Attend factory acceptance testing (FAT) for major equipment.
  • Prepare engineering and material cost estimates for bids/proposals.
  • Conduct technical writing for proposals and support business development activities.
  • Promote safety in design and participate in site visits as required.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in electrical engineering, including utility industry experience.
  • Proven track record in physical layout design of high-voltage substations.
  • B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and active registration with APEGA.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, mentor team members, and deliver results.
Preferred:
  • 12–15 years' experience specifically in utility substation design.
  • Previous experience managing a design team.
