Summary
St. Margarets School (SMS) is Western Canadas only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and WSNE Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 712). St. Margarets School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Programme, and we are a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The STEM & Experiential Learning (STEM-X) Programme Assistant is an innovative, dynamic individual who has a passion for the STEM fields, a keen eye for organization and enjoys working within an educational setting where STEM and experiential learning is key to moving forward the schools Strategic Plan. The STEM-X Programme Assistant is responsible for maintaining and organizing equipment, materials and supplies in the STEM-X laboratory classrooms and storage rooms, and supporting STEM-X classes, promoting STEM-X learning at SMS and coordinating and communicating STEM-X opportunities for enrichment.
The STEM & Experiential Learning Program Assistant works collaboratively with the classroom teachers in providing this support and will report directly to the Vice Principal, MYP & DP.
This position is well-suited to someone aspiring to be a STEM teacher looking to gain experience working within a dynamic school environment and having the opportunity to interact in the breadth of STEM and experiential learning programs offered at St. Margarets School.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Creates, documents, and maintains an organizational system and up-to-date inventory for laboratory equipment and supplies in the STEM-X laboratory and classroom spaces.
- Maintains an up-to-date inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Tests, maintains, and cleans laboratory equipment, arranging for outside service and repair as necessary.
- Prepares purchase lists for required equipment and supplies.
- Performs monthly inspections and routine cleaning to ensure that laboratories and storage areas are maintained and in good working order and that all safety equipment functions.
- Coordinates maintenance requests for STEM-X spaces.
- Liaises with academic staff to discuss equipment requirements, work plans, and prepare teaching resources as requested in advance.
- Writes procedures and lab logs for projects and programs.
- Provides setup and cleanup for STEM-X laboratory spaces and assists in the supervision of laboratory classes as needed (Science Labs, Robotics Design Lab, Media Lab, Exploration Studio, Woodworking Design Lab, Living Classroom)
- Ensures compliance with WHMIS regulations with regard to labeling, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous material.
- Complies with school policies related to safety and works with members of the Joint Health and Safety Committee as needed.
- Posts information related to careers in STEM and post-secondary STEM pathways (via Google Classroom, in person classroom visits, and the SMS Express).
- Coordinates with Science/STEM-X teachers, and the Marketing and Communications Department to share communications about STEM-X learning and engagement opportunities with students and the school community, and on the school website.
- Assist teachers with classroom and hallway displays, including showcasing information about STEM resources, equipment and careers.
- Supports in the development of the bi-annual STEM-X Conference.
- Other related duties as required.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum B.Sc. in a STEM discipline.
- Knowledge of IB MYP Science or IB DP Science Courses an asset.
- Minimum two years related work experience, ideally in a school setting.
- Must be experienced at calculations needed for solution preparation.
- Must be able and comfortable to work both safely and independently.
- Completed WHMIS certification.
- First Aid level 2 is an asset.
- Must be experienced with use of lab equipment.
