Summary/Objective

This position will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the funeral home to ensure high-quality, compassionate service to families, while maintaining compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies. This role involves managing staff, facilities, finances, and community relationships, ensuring operational excellence and business growth.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and oversees daily funeral home operations, ensuring smooth and efficient services.
  • Oversees the preparation and management of daily funeral summaries.
  • Schedules, plans, and coordinates funeral and memorial services in collaboration with families, clergy, and staff.
  • Ensures facilities, vehicle fleet, and equipment are maintained to company and regulatory standards, making sure they are pristine, presentable condition for client families.
  • Maintains accurate records, contracts, and service documentation in compliance with provincial and federal requirements.
  • Recruits, trains, mentors, and supervises funeral directors, embalmers, administrative staff, and support personnel.
  • Meets with families to arrange and direct services with empathy, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Provides guidance on service options, merchandise, and memorialization to meet the family's wishes and budget.
  • Ensures visitations and funeral services are conducted with the highest standard of care, exceeding the expectations of families and guests, and resolving concerns promptly.
  • Performs decedent embalming and preparation as well as assisting with the execution of funeral services, as needed.
  • Ensures adherence to applicable provincial and federal occupational health and safety legislation, the Competition Bureau's consumer protection requirements, Ontario's Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act and regulations administered by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) or Quebec's Act Respecting Prearranged Funeral Services and Sepultures where applicable and related regulations.
  • Maintains all necessary licenses and permits for facility, personnel, and operations.
  • Monitors and updates safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licensure

  • Four-year degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred required. Bachelor's degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of Funeral Home management experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of Funeral Director experience, preferred.
  • Ontario Funeral Service License preferred.
  • Valid Ontario-issued driver's license in good standing and acceptable driving record.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Able to read, write and speak English fluently. Bilingual is a plus.
  • Attend and perform work in a professional and courteous manner in accordance with the employer's requirements.
  • Demonstrated willingness to participate in growing market share through community involvement.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal, as well as external customers, community leaders, and grieving client families.
  • Ability to empathize with client families and their guests and demonstrate tact and patience in emotionally charged situations.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has direct management responsibilities, including hiring, firing, performance management and disciplinary actions as needed.

  • Outdoor duties may require exposure to natural elements such as inclement weather, extreme temperatures, uneven ground, dust, gas, and/or fumes.
  • Equipment used to perform the essential function of this position includes, but is not limited to computer, fax, copier, merchant terminal, multi-line phone system, personal or company owned vehicle.
  • Employees in this role are regularly required to climb, sit, stand, bend, kneel, and frequently lift to 25 pounds.
  • This position may also require reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • This position may also be exposed to chemicals and/ or blood borne pathogens. Exposure risk is considered: Low

Travel

  • This position may require up to 20 percent out of area and overnight travel.
  • Travel is primarily local occurring during the business day only.
