What is the role?
As a Structural Designer with the Bridge Sector in LEAs Structures Division, you will support the design and rehabilitation of bridge and transportation structures by preparing high-quality technical drawings using CAD (and other digital tools) and providing additional support to engineering and project management staff on project work. Working closely with engineers and project managers, you will translate design concepts into accurate, standards-compliant drawings for use in construction and permitting and assist in other project tasks, such as preparing quantities and cost estimates. Your role is essential in ensuring design clarity, consistency, and alignment with MTO and industry requirements across all project phases.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Prepare detailed CAD drawings and design packages for new bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other transportation structures. This also includes rehabilitation of existing structures.
- Create and update technical drawings using AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other relevant software, in compliance with MTO standards and project requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers to translate structural design concepts into precise construction drawings and supporting documentation (such as quantities, cost estimates, schedules, etc.).
- Review and revise drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to relevant codes and guidelines, including MTO and CSA standards.
- Support in organizing drawing sets, maintaining CAD standards, and ensuring consistent document control throughout the design process.
- Assist with preparing quantity take-offs, construction details, and as-built drawings.
- Coordinate with other disciplines and sub-consultants to ensure alignment of structural drawings with architectural, civil, electrical, and plans from all other disciplines.
- Participate in internal design review meetings and contribute to design development discussions.
- Maintain drawing databases and templates, and help develop and implement CAD standards within LEAs Bridge Sector, and across the Structures Division..
- Support the preparation of structural condition survey reports or site inspections, and preparing drawings based on field observations or inspection data.
- Continuously grow professional skills and knowledge through training sessions, seminars, workshops, and involvement in professional associations to stay updated on the latest trends, software, and technology.
- Assisting with managing other related assignments within the scope of the Structures Division, which may include Transit and Building structures.
The qualifications you need:
- Diploma in Structural, Civil, Construction, or Mechanical Engineering Technology or Technician program. Programs with a focus on structural or bridge engineering will be an asset.
- 1-2 years of experience producing CAD drawings for bridge or structural engineering projects will be an asset.
- Proficiency in the efficient use of AutoCAD is required, knowledge of other tools such as Revit, Civil 3D, or MicroStation is an asset.
- Familiarity with bridge design standards and manuals, including MTO guidelines, OPSD, and CSA codes, is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow design standards and QA/QC processes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced project environment.
- Effective communication and organizational skills are required to coordinate with engineers and team members.
Interest in continuous learning and staying updated on CAD tools and industry best practices.
The work arrangement:
LEA operates in a hybrid environment to ensure flexibility, safety, and the well-being of everyone. Periodic attendance at our Markham office is expected to facilitate in-person learning of new tasks with experienced senior staff.
