Are you passionate about advancing reconciliation and building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities? The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a dedicated Indigenous Relations Coordinator to lead initiatives that foster trust, promote cultural understanding, and ensure Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully integrated into municipal policies, programs, and services. In this impactful role, you'll serve as a key advisor and liaison, guiding departments on Indigenous relations and protocols while championing inclusive, community-driven approaches to engagement and collaboration.
This position is an on-site position located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Relocation Assistance is available for the successful candidate. Your key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous communities and act as a liaison for ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
  • Advise on integrating Indigenous perspectives into municipal policies, programs, and decision-making.
  • Lead and manage reconciliation-related projects, including tracking progress, reporting milestones, and maintaining records.
  • Promote Indigenous culture through events, displays, and public initiatives in partnership with other departments.
  • Monitor initiatives for compliance with Indigenous rights and consultation commitments at all government levels.
  • Analyze data and provide recommendations to support Indigenous inclusion and community well-being.
  • Ensure municipal services are accessible and culturally relevant to Indigenous communities.
  • Contribute to education and awareness efforts through training and resource development.
  • Engage in professional development to maintain expertise in Indigenous relations.

What you bring

  • Familiarity with Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous history, rights, treaties, and current issues in Canada.
  • Strong relationship-building and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Experience in project management, data analysis, and policy development.
  • Understanding of inclusion, diversity, and municipal governance (an asset).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and adaptability to new systems.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a degree in Indigenous Studies, Community Development, Human Services, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Indigenous relations, community engagement, or a similar field, preferably with a public sector employer.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of cultural protocols, practices, and traditions.
  • Equivalent experience and education will be considered.
