Machinist 1

Summary

Performs basic machining processes and learn more complex processes.

Duties/Responsibilities

Under direct supervision:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine machining operation to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planing, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
  • Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
  • Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
  • May set up and program machine tools for use by machining tool operator
  • Learn all aspects of machining equipment to produce components as required by written instructions
  • Change, set and adjust precision tools as required
  • Load and delete programs in the computer
  • Learn the machinability of metals.
  • Learn to make minor adjustments of feeds and speeds on the assigned machine.
  • Learn to grind own cutting tools and drills (other than special purpose tools).
  • Maintain specific tolerances and accurately perform dimensions.
  • Assist in checking parts using specified gages or check parts using furnished fixtures to see that dimensions are being maintained.
  • Learn about improper machine function and how to check parts not being held to the proper dimensions.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and precautions.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or 1 year of relevant experience
  • Able to read, write, and speak in standard English
  • Have the knowledge of and/or the ability to learn shop geometry and trigonometry.
  • Demonstrate a good mechanical aptitude.
