Reporting to the Manager, Diagnostic Imaging, the MRI Technologist is responsible for performing magnetic resonance imaging procedures utilizing in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, MRI principles, and imaging protocols. The role requires independent judgment, technical skill, and critical thinking to safely and efficiently operate MRI equipment and produce high-quality diagnostic images for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of injury and disease. The technologist ensures patient safety, comfort, and care throughout the imaging process and adheres to all regulatory and organizational standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform MRI scans in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and magnetic safety procedures to ensure high-quality diagnostic images

  • Review and assess imaging requisitions for accuracy and completeness, consulting with Radiologists or physicians as needed

  • Prepare patients for MRI exams, including screening for contraindications, explaining procedures, obtaining informed consent, and ensuring proper physical and emotional readiness

  • Operate and maintain MRI equipment, performing routine calibration and troubleshooting equipment issues in collaboration with service engineers

  • Monitor patients during scans, assess their condition pre- and post-procedure, and respond to any adverse reactions or emergency situations

  • Position patients correctly and select appropriate coils and sequences to achieve optimal image quality

  • Administer contrast media and medications following safety protocols and assess renal status and allergy risks

  • Ensure proper documentation, including data entry in RIS/PACS, coding procedures, and completing necessary reports such as incident or contrast logs

  • Maintain workflow efficiency across multiple MRI units, minimizing patient wait times and maximizing throughput

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including Radiologists, referring physicians, nurses, and clerical staff to ensure accurate and timely service delivery

  • Follow infection control and safety guidelines, particularly for isolation cases and within the magnetic field environment

  • Support and educate patients on MRI safety, anxiety coping strategies, and post-procedure care

  • Maintain supply inventory, ensuring exam rooms are stocked and reporting any damaged or low-stock items

  • Stay current with professional standards, protocols, and regulatory requirements through continuing education and practice updates

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Schroeder Ambulatory Centre Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines

Skills & Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a recognized post-diploma MRI program or equivalent with MRI certification is required

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) is required

  • Current certification in CPR or BLS, contrast injection, and cross-sectional anatomy is required

  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in MRI scanning, preferably on both 1.5T and 3.0T platforms in a hospital setting

  • Certified to initiate IVs

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to follow protocols and document clearly

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks independently

  • Proven team player with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative clinical environment

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills within established protocols

  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and professional discretion

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check/vulnerable sector check

  • Provide proof of Immunization and TB records
