Job Summary:
Participate in whole or in part in the building and service of blow mould tooling and related components to within tolerances and specifications as directed by technical drawings and documents, supervision, personal skill and experience. Assist with on-the-job training of semi-skilled staff and apprentices.
Job Responsibilities:
Depending on the skills and abilities of the individual, the following summary of responsibilities is assigned for each Welder when completing a basic tool:
- Tooling documents are received from the Team Leader, discussed and left with the welder for further review
- Conduct preoperational checks on equipment to be used
- Read and verify engineering drawings, perform related calculations and produce detailed component sketches as appropriate
- Raw materials are retrieved and modified as necessary to complete the tool (e.g. plates, vents, screws, blow needles)
- Ensure rudimentary tasks are assigned to General Helpers through the Lead Hand (i.e. - basic drilling, milling, cutting and deburring)
- Drill, machine, bench and assemble mould (e.g. blending vents, striker plates, pre-blow plates, parallels, mismatch, back plates, sand blasting, water testing, inserts, knockouts, hand tapping, reaming, etc.)
Job Qualifications:
- One (1) to five (5) years of welding in the injection and/or blow moulding field and a certificate of qualification in related discipline
- Detailed knowledge of welding equipment and materials
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications
- Ability to operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc (GTAW), gas metal arc (GMAW), flux-cored arc (FAW), plasma arc (PAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW), resistance welding.
- Proactive in making recommendations for improvements to the processes, procedures and construction of blow mould tooling and related components
- Is in possession of the basic tools necessary to complete assigned jobs (i.e. measuring tools, hand tools, optional power/pneumatic tools) or is willing to acquire the necessary tools within a reasonable time period
- Capable of providing on-the-job training to welders and semi-skilled general helpers
