This role is responsible for the day-to-day management of the legal support team, including all legal assistants and float staff. This position ensures high-quality service delivery to lawyers and clients while fostering a collaborative, professional, and efficient work environment.
Reporting directly to the Head of HR, the Manager works closely with the broader HR team on talent development, employee relations, and organizational effectiveness. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment, and will be comfortable coaching team members, optimizing operations, and driving initiatives that support engagement and performance.
This role requires someone who is thoughtful and strategic, able to evaluate existing structures, explore best practices, and lead change initiatives that improve team effectiveness and service delivery.
What Youll Be Doing:
Leadership & Operations
- Lead and supervise legal assistants and float staff across the firm.
- Oversee daily operations including staffing, scheduling, coverage, and workflow coordination.
- Monitor support needs within practice groups and adjust assignments to ensure optimal service delivery.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Talent Development & Performance Management
- Provide hands-on coaching, mentorship, and professional development support.
- Conduct regular performance check-ins, formal reviews, and 30/60/90-day assessments.
- Partner with HR on performance issues, employee relations, and development planning.
- Deliver onboarding experiences for new team members and contribute to training program design.
Collaboration, Strategy & Change Management
- Work closely with HR & lawyers on recruitment, retention, compensation, and policy interpretation.
- Evaluate team structure and support models, making recommendations for improvement based on best practices and business needs.
- Lead the team through change with empathy and clarity, ensuring smooth transitions and strong engagement.
- Promote best practices across the legal support function and contribute to firm-wide improvement efforts.
- Ensure alignment with firm policies, legislative requirements, and industry standards.

- Proven experience managing legal support staff or professional services teams; law firm experience preferred.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with HR, legal professionals, and other departments.
- Sound knowledge of employment practices and legislative compliance.
