Controller
Our client is searching for a Controller to join their team. This role will be responsible for providing financial leadership, expertise and support to the Corporate Accounting team, Finance Managers and others within the company as required. A successful candidate will be a member of the financial leadership team responsible for all month-end close activities, reporting and financial processes for the company. This role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.
Your success will be defined by your ability to:
  • Ensure all items on the balance sheet are maintained, accurate and reconciled
  • Prepare intercompany transactions as required
  • Ensure all sub ledgers are balanced to the general ledger
  • Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures
  • Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close
  • Lead the annual audit process with external auditors
  • Be responsible for the annual operational and capital budget process by reviewing for reasonableness and provide feedback in the adherence to KPI standards
  • Be responsible for the quarterly re-forecasting process by reviewing for reasonableness and providing feedback
  • Review the financial results and analysis with the Senior Operational and Financial management
  • Recommend improvements for the CMiC system and assist in developing business solutions for the team
  • Understand and monitor the use of the CMiC system to ensure accuracy capturing and reporting of data required for all user groups
  • Assist in identifying and recommending development and maintenance of the CMiC as updates and changes to the business environment evolve to ensure CMiC continues to work in an effective and efficient manner
  • Ensure that any changes to the system are implemented in a timely and effective manner
  • Ensure compliance with all commodity tax requirements within the appropriate timelines
  • Be the subject matter expert on Corporate taxation and Excise tax
  • Offer guidance on reporting and evaluation methods for goods subject to taxation
  • Oversee and coordinate the entire excise tax compliance process, focusing on risk reduction and ensuring accuracy
  • Review and manage tax research based on current and proposed tax legislation, including tax memoranda and implement recommendations
  • Collaborate with tax authorities to ensure compliance and resolve issues
  • Offer guidance on cross-border issues including the transfer of equipment and individuals
  • Develop, implement, maintain, monitor and document the accounting processes and controls to ensure continued internal controls and compliance
  • Communicate all variations to process to the business units and work collaboratively to implement consistent, effective and efficient processes
  • Provide guidance to the team on US GAAP
  • Manage the Corporate Accounting team within the company
  • Succession planning for each position in the group
  • Monitor and implement development plans for direct reports and ensure completed for all area finance personnel
Your strengths include:
  • A Degree or Diploma in Commerce, Business Administration, or equivalent discipline
  • 10+ years of Accounting or Finance experience with 5+ years of supervisory experience is required
  • A Professional Accounting Designation (CMA, CA, CGA CPA) is required
  • Knowledge of CMiC would be considered an asset
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP Reporting Standards
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Corporate Tax and Excise Tax
  • Knowledge of accounting and financial theories, practices, tax and application legislation
  • Strong computer skills are required with proven proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Strong General Ledger coding skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks and quickly adjust in a rapidly changing environment
  • Effective and proven organizational skills to meet multiple deadlines and handle multiple tasks in a high pressure and demanding work environment
  • Ability to enter and update data in accounting records accurately
  • Demonstrable ability to perform maturely and professionally ensuring complete confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information
  • Demonstrable ability to think critically, act logically to evaluate situations, solve problems, and make decisions
