Learning Center Teacher - Mi'kmawey Elementary School

Position Summary:
Mikmawey Elementary School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Center Teacher to support students with diverse learning needs. This position involves creating individualized education plans (IEPs), implementing various teaching strategies, and fostering an inclusive and culturally supportive classroom environment. The teacher will integrate Mikmaq culture, language, and values into their lessons, ensuring each student has the resources and support needed for success.
Duties:
- Create and deliver lesson plans tailored for students with special needs.
- Facilitate a Learning Center for elementary students.
- Utilize teaching strategies and technology to accommodate different learning styles.
- Implement behavior support plans and engage students in meaningful ways.
- Collaborate with staff to promote inclusive education practices.
- Track and assess student progress, adjusting methods as needed.
- Communicate student progress regularly with parents.
- Participate in meetings with families and colleagues to discuss student needs.
- Maintain accurate records of student development.
- Attend professional development to enhance teaching skills.
- Foster a safe and supportive classroom environment.
- Integrate Mikmaq culture and language into lessons.
- Provide training and support to colleagues on effective teaching strategies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Masters Degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Valid Nova Scotia Teachers Certificate.
- At least two years of experience teaching special education.
- Training in the MANDT system, or willingness to complete it.
- Knowledge of STAR and/or TEACCH programs is an asset.
- Experience creating and implementing IEPs.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse learners, staff, and families.
- Knowledge of Mikmaq culture and a willingness to integrate it into teaching.
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, and non-violent crisis intervention (or willingness to obtain).
