Financial Controller
The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council is comprised of the five member Nations and is responsible for providing guidance and support to the individual member First Nations in developing and achieving success in the management and administration of their own programs with the intent of developing self-reliance.
The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council consists of the member Nations of Loon River First Nation #476, Lubicon Lake Band #453, Peerless Trout First Nation #478, Whitefish Lake First Nation #459 and Woodland Cree First Nation #474. It was formed in 1995 to facilitate joint action by the member Nations on matters of mutual concern.
Job Description:
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for a variety of finance, accounting and reporting activities and responsibilities. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations and supervise a team of staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax, and grants administration. The Controller will maintain systems and procedures in place to support effective program reporting and adhere to audit requirements. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
Responsibilities:
Finance and Accounting Leadership
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
- Coordinate all audit activity.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of KTCs financial status.
- Assist KTCs leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
- Support the CFO in engaging the boards audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants;
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program leaders; continuously collaborate with program vice presidents to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
- Support our Economic Development department with regular reporting as well as our ongoing business operations reporting

- Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
Skills and Abilities:
- Communication: Proficient in verbal and written communication, able to convey informationclearly and articulate complex financial information in a way that non-finance professionals will understand.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data and trends to financial planning and strategies and measure effectiveness
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong relationship-building skills to work with colleagues, and stakeholders
- Project Management:Capability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines effectively.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Finance or Accounting, MBA or equivalent.
- First Nations finance department experience.
- Professional certification, such as CPA (certified public accountant) or CA (chartered accountant) is preferred.
- Ten or more years of professional accounting experience.
- Five or more years of experience as a mid to senior-level accounting or finance manager.
- Experience in managing payroll, with focus on streamlining accounting processes.
- Exemplary history of financial project management.
- Experience working with Indigenous/First Nations, with demonstrated cultural knowledge and competency.
- Knowledge of Cree language is an asset.
- Experience in audit preparation and support
- Experience in Budgeting and fund accounting
Conditions of Employment:
RCMP/Police Criminal Record Check submitted prior to commencement of employment. Proof of professional designation and/or educational requirements.
Candidates must possess valid drivers license with access to a vehicle and willingness, capability, and flexibility in working in and travelling to KTC First Nation communities.
