Through a strong focus on quality, technical capability, and customer service, we have earned a reputation for consistently exceeding our clients' expectations. Our Mississauga facility supports a wide range of aerospace component repair, manufacturing, testing, and engineering activities. We are seeking an experienced *R&D Designer – Aerospace* to support the development of innovative tooling, fixtures, test equipment, and engineering solutions across multiple aircraft systems and component applications. *JOB DESCRIPTION* The *R&D Designer – Aerospace* will be responsible for developing mechanical designs and practical engineering solutions to support component repair, manufacturing, testing, inspection, and process improvement activities. The primary focus of this position is *SolidWorks-based mechanical design*, particularly the design of *tooling, fixtures, jigs, test equipment, workholding devices, assembly aids, and other specialized equipment* used within an aerospace repair and manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering, R&D, Production, Quality, and Maintenance personnel to understand technical challenges and translate operational requirements into safe, practical, manufacturable, and effective designs. The role requires strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand the operation and interaction of various aerospace systems, including *hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, avionics, flight-control, and landing gear applications*. *RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE* * Develop 3D solid models and detailed 2D engineering drawings using *SolidWorks*.
* Design tooling, fixtures, jigs, workholding devices, assembly aids, inspection fixtures, and specialized equipment to support aircraft component repair, manufacturing, and testing.
* Design and support the development of *test fixtures and test equipment* for evaluating aerospace components and assemblies.
* Work with Engineering, Production, Maintenance, and Quality teams to understand operational requirements and develop practical engineering solutions.
* Evaluate existing repair, manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes and identify opportunities for improved tooling, automation, repeatability, ergonomics, safety, and efficiency.
* Develop concepts from initial sketches and requirements through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and implementation.
* Support prototype development and conduct design iterations based on testing, operator feedback, and observed performance.
* Assist with the development and improvement of *test procedures, test setups, acceptance criteria, and testing methods* for components and assemblies.
* Develop fixtures and equipment used for functional, dimensional, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, or other testing as required.
* Select appropriate materials, hardware, fasteners, bearings, seals, fittings, tubing, actuators, sensors, and other mechanical components for engineering designs.
* Apply proper *GD&T, tolerance analysis, fits, clearances, and dimensional control* to tooling and equipment designs.
* Ensure designs consider manufacturability, assembly, maintainability, operator safety, accessibility, durability, and cost.
* Perform engineering calculations and basic analysis required to support tooling and fixture designs, including loads, stresses, forces, pressures, tolerances, and factors of safety where applicable.
* Support fabrication and assembly of newly designed tools and fixtures and work directly with machinists, technicians, and external suppliers to resolve manufacturing issues.
* Participate in troubleshooting activities involving aircraft components, test equipment, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
* Investigate equipment or process failures and develop corrective design improvements.
* Interface with external vendors and suppliers for manufactured components, tooling, hardware, and specialized equipment.
* Provide technical guidance to junior designers, technicians, machinists, and other personnel when required.
* Maintain organized engineering drawings, models, revisions, and design documentation.
* Contribute to continuous improvement and R&D initiatives across the organization. *SKILLS REQUIRED* * *Advanced SolidWorks experience*, including:
* Part modeling
* Assembly modeling
* Detailed engineering drawings
* Configurations
* Sheet metal
* Weldments
* Design tables and parametric modeling
* Interference and clearance analysis
* Strong experience designing *tooling, fixtures, jigs, test equipment, or custom mechanical equipment*.
* Strong understanding of *GD&T and ASME Y14.5* drafting practices.
* Good understanding of mechanical design principles, including:
* Tolerance analysis
* Fits and clearances
* Fasteners and joints
* Bearings and bushings
* Seals
* Springs
* Linear and rotary mechanisms
* Structural members
* Machined and fabricated components
* Experience selecting engineering materials and manufacturing processes.
* Familiarity with aerospace materials, coatings, hardware, and industry practices.
* Understanding of machining, fabrication, welding, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and other common manufacturing methods.
* Experience with precision measuring tools and dimensional inspection techniques.
* Strong practical mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving ability.
* Ability to understand and design equipment supporting multiple aerospace applications, including:
* *Hydraulic systems*
* *Pneumatic systems*
* *Landing gear systems*
* *Actuation systems*
* *Flight-control components*
* *Avionics and electrical equipment*
* *Mechanical systems*
* *Aircraft structural components*
* Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic components such as cylinders, pumps, valves, regulators, accumulators, fittings, hoses, tubing, gauges, and pressure transducers is an asset.
* Familiarity with sensors, switches, proximity sensors, load cells, pressure sensors, displacement sensors, and other instrumentation used in test equipment is an asset.
* Basic understanding of electrical and avionics systems sufficient to collaborate with electrical and avionics specialists during multidisciplinary equipment development.
* Experience developing or supporting *test procedures, test equipment, experimental setups, or validation testing* is an asset.
* Ability to take an engineering problem from concept through design, fabrication, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation.
* Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
* Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple development projects simultaneously.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate with engineers, technicians, machinists, inspectors, operators, and management.
