The Traffic Engineering Technician 1 position provides technical support and assistance under the direction of a supervisor in the Traffic Management Centre. You will be responsible for the safe movement of all users of the transportation network. Primary duties include:
- Research and identify problems; prepare situation reports for management during special events, road closures, and other major incidents on the road network.
- Respond to concerns of the general public, elected officials and other City staff received through 3-1-1, email and telephone. Provide responses in writing (email or technical memorandum) or verbally.
- Review road closure plans and post information for citizens on Calgary.ca.
- Review, monitor, and post information for citizens on transportation network incidents. Call manual traffic signal timing patterns to manage congestion. Dispatch emergency services when necessary.
- Monitor traffic control device operation and dispatch field crews as necessary.
- Perform manual and automatic traffic counts and other traffic studies.
Qualifications
- A completed 2 year Technical Engineering diploma and up to 1 year of traffic engineering technician experience.
- Knowledge of and experience using Geographical Information System (GIS) software and basic proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Experience using Work Order system and knowledge of traffic engineering will be considered assets.
- Success in this position requires excellent communication skills, strong customer focus, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work with field crews and in a fast-paced environment.
