As a Building Automation Technician, you will specialize in commercial HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Building Management systems. You will be responsible for the database management of the Facility Operations, Siemens/Desigo database server and building level control systems including various building control systems and components. Primary duties include:

  • Configure field panel point database, programs, alarm definitions, trend definitions, graphics and system schedules.
  • Project Commissioning including the mechanical systems, lighting systems, Building Management Systems, submittal drawing review and mechanical drawing review.
  • Maintain Building Management systems, communication networks, controllers and components.
  • Test, calibrate, replace and upgrade control systems devices and components.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve various database control and hardware component problems.
  • Maintain and update control system documentation and as-built drawings.
  • Supervise contractors.

Qualifications

  • A completed 1 year certificate (full-time study) in Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technologist or a Journeyperson ticket recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board with at least 5 years of experience; OR
  • A completed 2 year certificate in Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technologist with at least 3 years of experience; OR
  • A completed 2 year technical diploma with at least 3 years of experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of a major building automation system (such as Honeywell or Siemens) and commercial building system controls and heating ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is also required.
  • Experience developing control sequence of operations and testing and commissioning control systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, building plans, schematic drawings (especially those related to HVAC), commercial building DDC controls and electrical systems.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR a Graduated Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 3 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Completed formal training on one of the major DDC automation systems will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting, analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities accompanied by strong decision making and communication skills.
  • Able to prioritize various tasks and are able to work both independently and as part of a team.
