What Is The Opportunity?

Aecon is seeking an experienced sustainability professional to support the advancement of the company's sustainability strategy during a period of significant growth across North America. The successful candidate will lead sustainability reporting activities while driving regulatory readiness, sustainable procurement initiatives, climate-related data collection processes, and operational sustainability programs.

This role acts as a bridge between corporate sustainability objectives and project delivery, working closely with operations, procurement, business development, environmental teams, finance, legal, and communications to integrate sustainability considerations into business processes and project execution.

What You'll Do Here

Sustainability Reporting & Disclosure

  • Support development of Aecon's sustainability disclosures, including sustainability-related reporting within the Annual Report, Sustainability Report, investor questionnaires, ESG ratings, and client submissions.
  • Coordinate collection, validation, and analysis of sustainability performance data.
  • Support greenhouse gas inventory development, assurance activities, and emissions performance tracking.
  • Prepare sustainability performance updates, management briefings, and presentation materials for senior leadership.

Regulatory Monitoring & Policy Development

  • Monitor and assess emerging sustainability regulations, standards, and market expectations across Canada and the United States.
  • Evaluate potential business impacts of evolving climate, environmental, supply chain, and disclosure requirements.
  • Support development of internal policies, procedures, and implementation plans to address evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Work with Legal, Procurement, Finance, Business Development, and Operations teams to strengthen organizational readiness for future sustainability requirements.
  • Provide strategic recommendations on sustainability-related risks and opportunities affecting Aecon's business.

Sustainable Procurement & Supply Chain Engagement

  • Support development and implementation of sustainable procurement programs across Aecon's operations and projects.
  • Collaborate with procurement and project teams to integrate sustainability considerations into sourcing and supplier engagement activities.
  • Support collection and management of supplier sustainability information, including greenhouse gas emissions data and environmental product declarations (EPDs).
  • Identify opportunities to improve supply chain sustainability performance and support client sustainability requirements.
  • Assist in evaluating emerging procurement-related requirements associated with public infrastructure projects and major clients.

Project Sustainability Integration & Early Engagement

  • Develop and implement streamlined approaches for sustainability data collection at the project level.
  • Work with project teams to establish sustainability requirements and data collection expectations during project startup and mobilization.
  • Improve processes for gathering environmental, climate, and sustainability performance information throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support development of tools, templates, and guidance materials that enable more efficient project sustainability reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and standardize sustainability data collection and management practices.

Climate Strategy & Performance Improvement

  • Support implementation of Aecon's climate commitments and emissions reduction initiatives.
  • Conduct research and analysis on decarbonization opportunities relevant to construction and infrastructure operations.
  • Support supplier engagement, operational improvement, and emissions reduction programs.
  • Monitor industry best practices, emerging technologies, and market developments that may affect Aecon's sustainability strategy

What You Bring to The Team

Education

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Business, Public Policy, Geography, or related discipline.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in sustainability, climate strategy, ESG reporting, environmental management, sustainable procurement, or related fields.
  • Experience supporting corporate sustainability reporting and disclosure programs.
  • Experience interpreting regulatory requirements and translating them into business actions.
  • Experience working with operational stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

Knowledge & Skills

The ideal candidate demonstrates experience in:

  • Sustainability and climate disclosure frameworks
  • Greenhouse gas accounting and emissions management
  • Sustainable procurement and supply chain sustainability
  • Environmental and climate-related regulations
  • Sustainability data management and analytics
  • Project management and stakeholder engagement

Preferred Experience

  • Construction, infrastructure, engineering, utilities, transportation, or industrial sectors.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. sustainability regulatory developments.
  • Experience with climate-related risk, procurement, or supply chain sustainability programs.

This position is offered as a 12-month maternity leave coverage contract

The expected pay range for this role is $85,000 - $93,500 per year

Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
