Start Date: January 4, 2027

For this exciting position, we are targeting students with a background in Geology, Chemistry, or similar areas. Candidates must be enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution for the full duration of the co-op term and plan to return to their studies upon completion for at least one academic term. If you are not currently located near the work location, you must be willing to commute or temporarily relocate for the term. A valid study permit and studentship letter will be required where applicable.

The Geochemistry Database Co-op will be part of the Geoscience, Reserves & Mining (GRM) team, within the Technical and Planning function. The GRM team is a diverse group of multi-disciplinary Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) that use the fundamental principles of geoscience to better understand Teck’s assets. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to assess geochemical data and apply accepted Quality Controls (QC), thus helping ensure that these foundational datasets are fit for use. These datasets are fundamental inputs to geoscience models and reserve and resource calculations that are used to quantify the value of orebodies and to develop mine plans.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to improve skills in data analysis and data compilation, while gaining valuable insights into industry best practices. The ideal candidate is keen to deepen their understanding of the application of geochemistry and quality control principles. If you have an interest in geochemical data, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to manage geochemical data. You will also learn to evaluate it and confirm it is suitable for its intended use.

This position reports to the Practice Lead, Data Assurance, based in Vancouver, with the option to work remotely up to two days per week.

Key Responsibilities

• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Ensure geochemical data from internal and third-party labs meets Teck’s quality standards and is fit for purpose
• Apply statistical techniques to measure accuracy and precision of analytical results and communicate results through email/memo/phone calls to project stakeholders
• Assist in continuous improvement through the streamlining and standardization of Teck’s geochemical databases across all sites and operations
• Engage with, and support projects across Teck with their geochemical/analytical needs
• Create and evaluate new ideas and technologies to help improve the way we do business

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology, Chemistry, or related fields
• Able to build and nurture positive working relationships with individuals of a diverse set of backgrounds
• Familiarity with common statistical techniques for evaluating analytical data for accuracy and precision (standard deviation, mean, median etc.)
• Previous experience applying QC controls to analytical data or in a production environment is beneficial
• Familiarity with relational data management solutions such as Access, acQuire, Datashed, etc is recognized as beneficial
• Familiarity with GIS and Geoscientific software packages (ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, LeapFrog, Imago, Krux, ioGAS) is considered an asset
• Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to recognize trends/anomalies in data
• Interest in geochemistry, analytical chemistry and/or data science
• Knowledge of scripting (T-SQL, Python, R, etc.) and common office productivity tools (Excel, Word, Outlook) is considered an asset
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas to all audiences
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and platforms quickly, accurately, and efficiently
• Experience in geochemical laboratories and some knowledge of common analytical techniques such as AAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, pXRF, XRF would be considered an asset
• Ability to communicate in Spanish is an asset

Pay Range: CAD $4,833 - $6,125 per month

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
