Stantec is seeking an engineer specializing in mine tailings management to support the growth of the Tailings and Mine Waste department in Montréal. This strategic position requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and a solid understanding of the Canadian mining sector.

Key responsibilities

Infrastructure Design and Management

  • Design and plan tailings storage facilities (TSFs), waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs), and water management systems, including dikes and containment structures, in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments, dam safety reviews, and inspections; analyze structural performance and recommend optimization measures.
  • Contribute to the development of closure and reclamation plans in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of technical documentation, provide support to field teams, and collaborate closely with related disciplines.

Technical Deliverables and Documentation

  • Prepare and contribute to the production of comprehensive, rigorous, and high-quality engineering reports that meet technical and regulatory requirements.
  • Produce technical deliverables adapted to the various study phases (Concept, PEA, PFS, FS, and detailed engineering).
  • Draft technical memoranda, design criteria, and detailed stability analyses, ensuring clarity, consistency, and traceability of assumptions and results.

Your background

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical specialization
  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical specialization (an asset)
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ)
  • Minimum of 15 years of geotechnical experience in the mining industry

Technical Experience

  • Significant experience in the design, stability analysis, and management of tailings storage facilities (TSFs), waste rock dumps, and associated containment structures.
  • Strong expertise in geotechnical characterization of mining materials, dam and dike design, and stability analysis of structures.
  • Solid understanding of mining operations and tailings management, with proven experience in an engineering consulting environment.

Technical Skills

  • Required software: Proficiency with essential geotechnical tools, including GEO‑SLOPE (SLOPE/W, SEEP/W), PLAXIS or RS2, and AutoCAD.
  • Additional tools (asset): Experience with FLAC and computational or programming environments such as MATLAB or Python.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Excellent communication skills in both French and English, with strong teaching abilities and proven effectiveness in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking, with a demonstrated ability to make sound technical decisions in a timely manner.

Your keys to success

  • Experience working in the mining industry, including participation in mine closure and site rehabilitation projects.
  • Demonstrated technical contributions through publications or presentations, supported by additional professional certifications.
