The Opportunity

Power Better Connections from the Ground Up

Build your technical foundation within a collaborative substation team delivering physical design solutions for safe, reliable, and resilient electrical infrastructure. Your work will contribute to the systems that power communities, critical assets, and the transition to a lower-carbon energy future.

As a Junior Physical Designer (Layout) based in Thornhill, Toronto, or Mississauga, you will support physical layout design for substations ranging from 5 kV to 735 kV. This early-career opportunity offers practical experience in substation plans and elevations, grounding, lightning protection, bus design, cable routing, equipment specifications, construction support, and multidisciplinary project delivery for utilities and renewable-energy clients across Canada.

Your Impact

  • Design substation physical design (layouts), including plans, elevations, grounding systems, lightning protection, cable trough and conduit arrangements, and bills of materials under professional guidance.

  • Produce coordinated, construction-ready drawings and technical deliverables that align with applicable codes, standards, utility practices, and client requirements.

  • Contribute to grounding, lightning, and bus-fault stress studies using tools such as CDEGS, WinIGS, or equivalent analysis software.

  • Collaborate with physical design leads, engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to resolve interfaces and deliver high-quality design packages.

  • Support equipment specifications, feasibility studies, proposals, estimates, client reviews, site visits, construction inquiries, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting activities.

  • Strengthen safety, quality, and continuous improvement across every project.

The Skills That Set You Apart

  • A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution, with eligibility to register as an Engineer-in-Training with Professional Engineers Ontario if the position is classified as an engineering role.

  • Foundational knowledge of substation physical design gained through coursework, co-op placements, internships, or early-career project experience.

  • Experience using AutoCAD or MicroStation to develop physical layouts, plans, elevations, details, and coordinated drawing packages.

  • Exposure to grounding and lightning analysis using CDEGS, WinIGS, or similar tools, together with an understanding of relevant CSA, IEEE, and IEC standards.

  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, equipment information, and multidisciplinary design inputs and translate them into accurate deliverables.

  • Availability for occasional travel, client meetings, field reviews, and site work in accordance with project-specific health and safety requirements.
