Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Integrated Delivery Division is seeking an Advisor, Wayfinding who will act as a subject matter expert in wayfinding design, conducting design reviews and developing signage artworks for Metrolinx projects and initiatives. The individual will support the maintenance and continuous improvement of customer-facing wayfinding standards and products, such as complex transit maps, ensure capital project compliance with the DS-03 Metrolinx Wayfinding Design Standard, and support a consistent customer navigation experience across the regional transit network.

What will I be doing?

  • Provides subject matter expertise in wayfinding and navigation for public transit environments to project designers, project delivery teams, and operations divisions for rapid transit and GO Transit.
  • Develops and maintains customer-facing map products utilized across GO rail, GO bus, UP Express, Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West, and future operational services, including station maps, network maps, and bus maps.
  • Produces and updates signage artworks meeting the DS-03 Metrolinx Wayfinding Design Standard using industry-standard graphic design software, including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Independently conducts design reviews of wayfinding design drawings and technical documentation for rapid transit and GO capital projects, identifying issues and providing recommendations to ensure compliance with the DS-03 Metrolinx Wayfinding Design Standard.
  • Reviews municipal proposals to utilize the Metrolinx owned and municipally leveraged DS-03 Metrolinx Wayfinding Design Standard and determines methodology for approving use of the T-Symbol as the transit identifier logo throughout the region.
  • Consults with transit service providers, project teams, and internal business units throughout the planning, design, and implementation of wayfinding programs.
  • Provides clear, evidence-based rationale for design review comments and recommendations through the application of established standards and best practices.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • University Degree in Graphic Design, Information Design, Interior Design, Environmental Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, or a related discipline - OR - an advanced/specialist technical certification, requiring an equivalent number of years of post-secondary education.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Strong graphic design and visual communication skills.
  • Knowledge of wayfinding principles, signage systems, and wayfinding global best practices in transit environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Familiarity with the application of French, and English and French braille on static signage.
  • Experience within public transit, transportation, or large-scape public-facing environments is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam Revu and QGIS is an asset.
