Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Our I&IT Product Operations team is looking for a highly technical leader with deep hands-on experience designing, implementing, and operating enterprise monitoring, observability, and event management platforms. The ideal candidate has direct "hands-on-keyboard" experience configuring monitoring tools, deploying and managing agents and telemetry collection, building dashboards, tuning alerts, developing automations and integrations, and driving event correlation and noise reduction across large-scale hybrid and cloud environments.
This individual should possess a strong engineering mindset with practical experience onboarding applications and infrastructure into monitoring platforms, managing telemetry pipelines, integrating with ITSM and automation tools, and translating operational requirements into actionable observability solutions that improve service reliability and operational efficiency.
What will I be doing?
- Provides strategic leadership and oversight to ensure monitoring and observability practices are consistently implemented across I&IT portfolios, projects, and vendor-delivered solutions.
- Event normalization, enrichment, categorization, and severity mapping aligned to business criticality, service impact, operational priorities, and incident management processes.
- Alert quality and effectiveness, including actionability, threshold management, noise reduction, suppression strategies, deduplication, correlation, escalation criteria, and continuous alert tuning.
- Defines the minimum monitoring and observability baseline for systems entering production and drives adoption across I&IT and vendor-delivered solutions.
- Creates a work environment aligned with Metrolinx’ goals to be a “best company to work for,” ensuring teams have the skills, resources, clarity, and support required.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

Completion of a university degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline or advanced/specialized technical certification of equivalent years.

Demonstrated experience with significant job-related experience. This role requires a highly skilled professional combining depth and breadth in two disciplines (Development and Operations), as well as people leadership capabilities.

Cloud certifications (Azure), or Observability/Monitoring certifications, or SRE/DevOps-oriented training.

Leading transformational change, risk assessment, and maturity initiatives related to monitoring and observability; using lessons learned to drive measurable improvements.

Strong knowledge of IT service management and operations practices (event/incident/problem/change) and how observability supports operational outcomes.

Broad and deep technology knowledge across:

Cloud and hybrid environments, networking, compute, storage, and modern application stacks

Observability concepts: metrics/logs/traces, service health models, correlation, enrichment, dashboards, SLI/SLO patterns

Experience with instrumentation and automation approaches, including scripting/coding in one or more of: Python, JavaScript, SQL, YAML, Terraform HCL (or equivalent) for automation and platform integration.

Experience with monitoring/event management tooling and integration patterns (tool-to-tool, ITSM, CMDB/context enrichment, on-call/chatbots), including data pipeline considerations (scale, latency, retention).

Strong vendor management and contract governance skills; ability to define and enforce SLAs/OLAs, acceptance criteria, and performance outcomes.
