Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. The Timetabling Specialist plays a critical role in shaping the future of rail service across the network. This position is responsible for developing long-term rail timetables that align with future infrastructure investments, corridor designs, and planned service strategies. This role will support the GO Expansion Operations team These timetables establish the operational foundation for phased service enhancements and network growth.

Using specialized scheduling and modelling tools, the Timetabling Specialist analyzes rail operations and translates future-state plans into clear operating specifications, planning assumptions, and service requirements. The role works closely with stakeholders across service planning, infrastructure, fleet, and operations teams to ensure future service plans are practical, efficient, and aligned with organizational objectives.

What will I be doing?

  • Plans and implements new services, and validates operating changes (e.g. timetabling, crewing, cycling, and consist of length)
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to ensure technical and operational variables are identified and are incorporated effectively into all future service plans and rail related infrastructure projects
  • Monitors trends of rail traffic activity over all subdivisions in order to predict the impacts on proposed schedules and rail operations
  • Provides technical and administrative supervision to staff; organizes and monitors new and upgraded staff training
  • Initiates and participates in ongoing technological needs assessment and provides consultation for all related Information Technology (IT) projects (e.g. software development and acquisition through the RFP process and program commissioning

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a diploma in Engineering, Planning, Business Administration or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience supervising and monitoring rail operations services, preferably in a public transit environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory requirements governing delivery of passenger rail services e.g. Transport Canada (TC), Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems to identify the need for system upgrades and changes.
  • Analytical skills to investigate operating problems and recommend solutions.
  • Personal resiliency to manage conflicting pressures and address front-line customer-facing issues.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
