Detailed Overview
The Indigenous Elders Activity Worker provides services to the Indigenous Elders Activity Program by implementing and participating in wellness and/or social activities. Provides demonstrations, promotes client participation in activities and provides feedback. In collaboration with the Recreation Therapist, adapts and modifies established activities to meet the specific needs of clients. Assists with client intake including inputting client information into relevant databases.
Responsibilities
- Implements and participates in recreational and/or social activities designed to meet the needs of clients.
- In collaboration with the Recreation Therapist, adapts and modifies established activities to meet the specific needs of clients.
- Participates in the development of activities by providing input to the multidisciplinary team.
- Promotes client participation in activities, provides demonstrations as required and provides feedback regarding the performance and progress of clients.
- Observes clients and reports unsafe conditions and/or any behavioural, physical, health and/or cognitive changes.
- Sets up furnishings, equipment and supplies for activities. Cleans and sterilizes in accordance with established procedures.
- Accompanies clients on scheduled outings related to the Indigenous Elders Activity Program.
- Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as statistics, progress reports, activity preparation reports, observation reports and client activity profiles.
- Provides basic information to clients to support their health and well-being.
- Performs limited food preparation such as heating prepared food, making tea, coffee, toast, etc.
- Maintains an inventory of equipment, tools, and materials related to activities.
- Assists with client intake by performing duties such as obtaining client information and completing documentation required. Supports scheduling and confirmation of clients’ appointments.
- Transports passengers to program activities by operating a motor vehicle with a seating capacity of 10 or less (including driver).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience:
Grade 12, completion of a recognized Activity Assistant Program or Care Attendant Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certificates in First Aid, CPR and Food Safe. Experience working with Elders and in Indigenous community health.
Valid Class IV BC Drivers License and personal vehicle for work related purposes.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, experience facilitating groups and program development.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
