About the RoleWorking closely with senior engineers, the Design Engineer will be an active member of the Transportation team, with responsibility for project tasks in the following areas:
- Perform client liaison and project management to support efficient and effective project delivery
- Preparation of electrical designs for traffic signals and lighting
- Preparation of electrical and systems design for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure including CCTV, Advanced Traveler Information Systems, Traffic Safety Systems, Active Traffic Management Systems.
- Preparation of calculations and simulations
- Preparation of design documentation, including drawings, cost estimates, and construction specifications
- Performing construction services and site inspections
- Performing system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Participation in design development and design review meetings with clients and other stakeholders
- Travel to site locations and on-site work as required, including construction inspections, system commissioning, and troubleshooting tasks.
- Other duties as may reasonably be assigned
- Efficient and effective implementation of all the above, undertaken in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner.
QualificationsCore QualificationsThe preferred and required skills of a successful candidate are listed below:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university, or diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology program or equivalent from a recognized technical institute.
- At least 2-5 years experience in an engineering consulting environment
- Eligible for registration or registered with EGBC as an EIT, P.Eng., or P.L.Eng.
- Experience preparing electrical designs for transportation projects
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code
- Knowledge of Provincial Codes and industry standards (MMCD, MUTCDc, IES Recommended Practices)
- Strong computer skills including good working knowledge of the MS Office suite
- Experience coordinating and/or managing project teams
- Experience preparing project proposal documents and developing project fee tables
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Eagerness to learn and a positive, professional attitude
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
Desirable Qualifications Beyond the core skills, there are particular qualifications that will set you apart. The successful candidate will likely have most or all of the following qualifications:
- Experience with industry standard software design packages such as:
- AutoCAD
- Bluebeam
- Synchro
- AGi32 or Visual Lighting
- Experience with traffic simulation and modelling
- Experience or general understanding of outdoor electrical systems such as street lighting, site lighting, pathway lighting, and/or traffic signals
- Ability to perform engineering calculations such as:
- Load calculations
- Voltage drop
- Photometric calculations
- Conduit fill
- Experience in a consulting environment
- Experience conducting site investigations, condition assessments and performing field startups (testing and commissioning)

CompensationThe range of compensation for this position is $90,000 to $125,000. This salary range is provided specifically for compliance to provincial legislation. The actual salary will depend on the skills, experience, and capabilities of the successful candidate relative to the role and may or may not land within the range specified above.
