The RoleWe are seeking a strategic Director, of Health, Safety & Environment to oversee safety at our oil sands sites and other projects in the Fort McMurray region. This role is responsible for driving a strong and consistent safety culture across a range of complex heavy civil earthwork and construction activities related like overburden, reclamation, access road construction, grading, excavation, borrow pits, etc. The ideal candidate has mining/oil sands experience and is available to work both in the office and on site. This role may also help oversee safety for other companies under the Kichton Group of Companies.
The HSE Manager will ensure all operations are carried out safely, in compliance with regulatory and client requirements, and is very strong at disability management and WCB administration. This role reports into the Fort McMurray Area Manger.
Location/Job Details
- Kichton Construction Office in Fort McMurray, AB and on-site as required.
- 8-hour days, 5 days on, 2 off. OT and work on weekends as required.
- Candidates must be local to Fort McMurray.
- Fast-paced, busy work environment.
- Travel is required in all types of weather conditions to various work sites.

- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s HSE management system.
- Oversee HSE performance across multiple projects.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Alberta OH&S legislation, environmental regulations, and client-specific HSE requirements.
- Conduct and lead field audits, inspections, and safety observations.
- Lead incident management processes including reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Drive a proactive safety culture focused on hazard identification, risk mitigation, and frontline engagement across all construction disciplines.
- Support safe execution of high-risk activities including excavation, trenching, lifting operations, underground utilities, heavy equipment operations, etc.
- Develop and deliver HSE training programs.
- Monitor, analyze, and report HSE performance metrics and trends to executive leadership.
- Ensure environmental compliance including erosion control, spill prevention, reclamation, waste management, and site restoration.
- Act as primary liaison with regulatory agencies, clients, and external auditors.
- Lead and mentor HSE personnel across multiple job sites and operational regions.
- Manage WCB administration.
- Manage modified workers.
- Complete safety orientations.
- Ensure training requirements per position are maintained and updated in accordance with regulatory and client specifications.
- Ensure our training database as it relates to safety and training is being used to its full potential (Bis Trainer).
- Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to direct reports (two HSE Advisors) and when applicable other HSE roles within our Group of Companies.
- Assist site supervisor with investigations, disciplinary actions, training of site personnel.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive HSE experience in heavy civil earthworks. Mining/oilsands experience is required.
- Knowledge of pipeline, deep foundation, anchoring, piling, shoring, civil earthworks and underground utilities considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of AB OH&S legislation and environmental regulatory requirements.
- Professional designation (CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent) required.
- Proven ability to manage HSE across multiple remote and complex field sites.
- Strong incident investigation and corrective action leadership capability.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills across field and executive teams.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, high-risk, weather-dependent construction environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, One Drive).
- Familiar with ISNetworld standards and portal submission.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with Bis Trainer strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
