The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), Canada’s Centre for Pandemic Research, is a world leader in infectious disease research and vaccine development for humans and animals. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, VIDO is home to one of the largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. To strengthen the preparedness for emerging infectious diseases we are currently expanding our infrastructure to include containment level 4 capacity, a GMP vaccine manufacturing facility, and a new animal housing facility. Our vision includes having the capacity to study any emerging disease in any animal model embracing a One Health approach to prevent emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in humans and animals. Within VIDO, Dr. Sutton’s research group is seeking a motivated Research Technician (Level III) to join their team. Research conducted in the Sutton laboratory focuses on understanding the pathogenesis and transmission of seasonal and emerging influenza viruses. In parallel, the Sutton laboratory also develops and tests vaccines against these agents. The candidate will manage general laboratory operations such as ordering supplies and tracking expenses, and they will also perform a range of duties at both containment level 2 and 3. Duties will include cell and virus culture, molecular biology and influenza reverse genetics, assistance with training of personnel and students, and maintaining and preparing reagents. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the candidate will work well independently and in a team. Importantly, the candidate will have a “can do” attitude that promotes and facilitates the overall success of the lab and its trainees. Qualifications· A technical diploma in a related field or undergraduate degree in biology or with a specialization in virology, microbiology or molecular biology.· Minimum 7 years of experience in virology, microbiology, or related field· Experience working culturing mammalian cells, working with eukaryotic viruses, and performing molecular biology will be assets· Experiencing managing a research laboratory will also be an asset· Certification to work in a containment level (CL) 2 lab· Willingness to obtain certification to work in a CL3 lab is an asset Status: 2 years, with possibility of extensionEmployment Group: Non-UnionShift: Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours per day (37.5 hours per week)Full Time Equivalent (FTE): 1.0 The successful applicant will be required to provide the following current verification(s) where 'Yes' is indicated below.
