Electronics Development Engineer

Norcada is a MEMS, nanotechnology, and photonics company in Edmonton, Canada. The company focuses on the development and manufacturing of products with applications in environmental monitoring, microscopy, microanalysis, genomics and quantum science. Since our founding in 2002, Norcada has developed a broad customer base for its products, with sales and product development collaborations in four continents and more than 40 countries worldwide. The Position Norcada is currently looking for an “Electronics Development Engineer” to support the to support the design, manufacturing, and testing of our new products. The new Engineer will join the Embedded Systems Team, reporting to the Director of Instrument Manufacturing and Assembly, who oversees our design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of our instrumentation solutions. We are seeking individuals with a University-level education and experience with a proven track record in design of new products, assembly of electrical parts, execution of production plans and documentation, PCB design, assembly of electronic components on PCB, and electronic testing. This is a full time, permanent position and provides medical and pension benefits. Key Responsibilities
  • Design, development, component selection, and assembly of electronic systems and their required software.
  • Project definition, planning, execution, monitoring and reporting to ensure stakeholders are up-to-date and products are delivered in accordance with requirements.
  • Define and validate specifications, and write technical reports.
  • Firmware and software development as required.
  • Testing, debugging, troubleshooting and calibration of new products and R&D instruments.
  • Create product documents such as production travellers and customer manuals.
  • Work closely with the team leaders, engineers, technologists and other cross-functional teams on prototype planning, execution and quality control.
  • Establish good relationships with vendors to develop customized solutions. This may include occasional visits to their facilities.
  • Work with team members to ensure clean and organized stations, and establish a lean system through participation and taking initiatives.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and an uncompromised commitment to confidentiality.
Qualification and Experience
  • Post-secondary education in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering (BSc, MSc, PhD). A Professional Engineer designation and/or good standing with APEGA is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in design and development of embedded systems, instruments and electronic circuits.
  • Hands-on knowledge of control systems, DAQs, MCUs, SBCs, FPGAs, sensors, actuators and communication interfaces to develop data acquisition and control systems.
  • Experience designing, manufacturing and assembling PCBs is highly sought in this position.
  • Experience with CE, CSA, UL, NRTL and other certification standards.
  • Solid programming skills in LabVIEW, Python and C/C++.
  • Working knowledge of version control systems.
