Do you believe everyone should have access to healthy food, and that food can be a powerful tool for connecting people and building better health and a stronger community? Are you someone who is excited to make a difference and help support The Food Bank’s mission to obtain and distribute emergency food from our neighbours to our neighbours?
The Food Bank of Waterloo Region (The Food Bank) is looking for board members to join our volunteer leadership team in October 2023 for a 3-year term.Board members provide strategic direction and oversight to The Food Bank to ensure we are advancing our mission, to obtain and distribute emergency food from our neighbours to our neighbours. Responsible for adopting sound ethical and legal governance and financial management policies, our board members help ensure we can channel our community efforts to ensure no one goes hungry. Serving as ambassadors and advocates in the community, our board members also contribute to our culture, strategic focus, effectiveness, and financial stability.

Time Commitment
Board Member ExperienceWe’re looking for volunteers with the skills, perspectives, experiences, and passion to help us be better and do better. Previous board experience is helpful but not necessary as we aim to bring as diverse a perspective to our Board as possible. We need volunteer board members with experience in any or all of the following areas: legal, finance, real-estate, social services, transportation and logistics.
We believe that diverse teams perform better and that fostering an inclusive governance environment is a key part of growing a successful organization and having measurable community impact. We welcome people of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We commit to increasing the diversity of our Board by actively and intentionally recruiting individuals who reflect the communities we serve including those who have lived experience with food insecurity.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region is dedicated to meeting the needs of the community and ensuring no one goes hungry. Through community partnerships, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region acquires and distributes food to 100+ local community agencies and food programs. At the centre of our Community Food Assistance Network, we facilitate and coordinate partnerships through a systems level approach – providing food and connection to the vital supports needed by individuals living in Waterloo Region. We work with agency partners, community stakeholders and government partners to build Network capacity ensuring capacity, consistency, efficiencies, and effective service delivery through all parts of our community.

- Oversight of the Chief Executive Officer
- Strategic direction of The Food Bank
- Determining mission, vision, and purpose of The Food Bank
- Financial and fiduciary oversight of The Food Bank
- Minimize organizational risk for The Food Bank
Board Member Expectations
- Participate in governance of The Food Bank and strategic planning
- Represent and be accountable to the entire community served by The Food Bank
- Provide leadership in promoting public understanding of vision and role of The Food Bank
- Act in the best interest of The Food Bank
Time Commitment
- 9 meetings per year (both in person and virtual)
- 3 Year Term (may serve 3, 3-year terms)
- Up to 10 hours a month (including meeting preparation)

Transformational Impact at The Food Bank of Waterloo Region
- 1 in 14 households in Waterloo region struggle to afford to put food on the table. That number was 1 in 20 households the year before.
- More than 40,500 people use an emergency food program—an increase of 17 per cent over the 34,620 residents supported by the Community Food Assistance Network in 2020–2021.
- 35% of people receiving food support from the Community Food Assistance Network are children under the age of 18. That’s about 14,000 kids.
- More than 114,000 food hampers and 675,000 community meals were distributed by the Community Food Assistance Network.
- 313 food hampers were distributed daily by community programs and agency partners.
- 1,850 community meals were served every day.
- The Food Bank acquired, coordinated, and distributed more than 5.3 million pounds of fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food across the Community Food Assistance Network. That’s the same as 4.1 million+ meals.
- 4.1 million+ meals were provided through emergency hamper programs, community meals, nutritional outreach, and shelter/residential programs.
