Capital Mrkts Sales & ServiceWe are hiring for a Director, Energy Sales to join BMO’s Commodity Origination team in New York. The broad mandate will be to work with the Commodities team and with partners in Investment, Corporate and Commercial Banking across sectors including US Energy, Power, Utilities & Infrastructure, Diversified and Industrial teams to build market share in Commodities.
The candidate will bring deep expertise in the highly dynamic energy markets in North America and Internationally to originate physical and financial structures, including financing solutions, for BMO’s Corporate and Commercial client base.
This role includes direct client coverage responsibility across the range of Oil & Natural Gas commodities, working as an integral part of our Commodities team to structure transactions and identify opportunities to expand the platform.
Group Overview
BMO Commodities is a part of the Global Origination business within Global Markets responsible for Origination, Trading and Risk Management of financial and physical transactions and structures across Energy, Metals, Agriculture/Soft commodities and Environmental and Carbon commodities. The Energy and Agricultural team are based in New York, Calgary and Toronto while the Metals team are also located in London and Hong Kong.
Key Areas of Accountability
Skills:
- Minimum 7 years' experience managing an active portfolio of client relationships, providing physical and financial solutions across Oil Liquids and Natural Gas with focus on the US markets
- Leverage extensive client relationships to originate, structure and execute transactions across the energy value chain, spanning both physical and financial energy products
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) including listening, understanding, and responding to internal and external inquiries
- Experience developing and communicating Client marketing materials for Energy products
- Excellent market and derivative knowledge (linear and non-linear), and ability to pair the two to identify trade opportunities
- Ability to exercise independent thought and judgment under limited supervision and adapt quickly to new tasks and opportunities with little notice
- Ability to effectively operate within a team, collaborate with peers and manage up the reporting hierarchy
- Expertise in financial computer applications including MS Excel, VBA, and Bloomberg. Strong proficiency across Microsoft Office suite
Knowledge:
- Demonstrates strong knowledge of Energy markets – financial and physical
- Confident originating and negotiating structured transactions including prepays, financings, storage and asset management agreements
- Thorough knowledge of client exposures and tools to mitigate risk
- Knowledge of banking and risk concepts as well as derivative regulations
- Current on existing and emerging Energy Industry trends around the world
- Relevant experience and passion for working in a direct client-facing role, providing proactive thought leadership and idea generation including at Executive levels
Transaction Modelling & Financial Analysis:
- Use abilities in financial and fundamental analysis to communicate effectively and succinctly with Commodities Trading and clients to facilitate transactions
- Develop marketing ideas and help initiate transactions through appropriate presentation of data, including internally where stakeholder support is necessary
- Understand systems for pricing transactions, including modelling exposures, capital footprint and returns
Collaboration:
- Be a strong partner within the Commodities Team to share market information and solve problems
- Build relationships with product partners across Global Markets to provide/solicit cross-product mandates for new opportunities
- Continuously coach and mentor Analysts and Associates
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction through strong cross-department coordination with the following groups:
- Other Global Markets Groups
- I&CB
- Commercial Banking
- Trade Floor Supervision
- Credit & Market Risk
- Client Onboarding
- Legal & Compliance
Please note the base salary for this role is $275,000 USD.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
