JOB DESCRIPTION
We're looking for a Senior Marine Systems Engineer to join our Hull Engineering team and play a key role in the design and delivery of advanced vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard.
In this role, you'll provide technical leadership across the full lifecycle of marine systems - from design and construction through testing, commissioning, and delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who is passionate about shipbuilding and thrives in complex, multidisciplinary environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical oversight and guidance on marine systems throughout design, construction, testing, and commissioning phases
- Independently review vendor and subcontractor deliverables, including calculations, models, reports, and technical specifications
- Ensure compliance with customer requirements, Classification Society rules, and shipyard standards
- Support production and trials teams by assisting with installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of systems
- Develop and deliver key engineering outputs such as:
- Technical specifications
- System arrangement drawings
- Engineering reports and test documentation
- Manage both planned and emergent work within your scope and meet critical project timelines
- Create and maintain engineering procedures and processes for recurring work
- Identify and manage risks, develop mitigation strategies, and make sound, risk-based technical decisions
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to drive project success
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives within your discipline
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (B.Eng.) or equivalent
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (or eligibility)
- Approximately 8+ years of relevant experience, ideally in:
- Naval or commercial ship design and construction, or
- Complex industrial or manufacturing environments
- Strong knowledge of:
- Marine systems and shipbuilding practices
- Applicable standards and regulations (e.g., Lloyd's Register, Transport Canada, IMO, IACS)
- Experience working with:
- Technical drawings and blueprints
- 3D ship models or simulations
- Engineering specifications and reports
- Ability to manage schedules, meet deadlines, and prioritize work effectively
- Familiarity with shipyard disciplines, including hull structure, outfit, producibility, and manufacturing processes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical, hands-on approach
Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
