JOB DESCRIPTION
1. IDENTIFICATION
Job Title: Housing Journeyman Plumber
2. PURPOSE
The Maintenance Plumber performs work in order to maintain and repair Local Housing Organization (LHO) buildings and works. The Maintenance Plumber works within the maintenance management program and performs those tradesmen duties listed therein.
REPORTS TO
The Journeyman Plumber reports to the Maintenance Manager (Foreman).
Scope
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager/Foreman, the Maintenance Plumber performs the following functions:
1. Inspects plumbing and components to ensure it is in satisfactory condition.
2. Complete plumbing work and renovations in accordance with work orders, plans, and specifications, to ensure that LHO buildings and works are well maintained.
3. Completes reports for all maintenance and repairs.
4. Performs other duties.
Responsibilities
Inspection Services:
conducting regular preventative maintenance inspections of all components;
diagnosing faults and identifying repairs required; and
completing inspection reports.
Plumbing Work:
repairing and replacing plumbing systems and equipment such as bathroom fixtures, sump pumps, sewage systems, water supply lines and hot water tanks;
installing new plumbing systems;
thawing and replacing sewer and water systems
Records Administration:
identifying supplies required and compiling materials lists;
completing work orders for all work assignments;
accounting for eight hours of work each day plus any overtime; and
assisting in inventory and stock control.
Other:
identifying unsafe and hazardous conditions;
cleaning work/shop machinery, sharpening tools, and servicing as required;
assisting other tradesmen in emergency situations;
providing advice to other tradesmen as required;
supervising and training apprentices and casual staff;
ensuring new apprentices, casuals and students receive safety orientation; and
assisting district technical staff from time to time.
3. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
(a) Describe the level of knowledge, experience and abilities that are required for satisfactory job performance.

Trade certification in plumbing;
Property Management and/or Housing Maintenance experience;
Computer training and experience;
Supervisory/management experience; and
Proven experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
Knowledge of the Inuit language and Inuit Societal Values would be an asset.
4 . WORKING CONDITIONS
List the unavoidable, externally imposed conditions under which the work must be performed and which create hardship for the incumbent. Express frequency, duration and intensity of each occurrence in measurable time (e.g. every day, two or three times a week, 5 hours a day).
The Housing Journeyman Plumber schedules and prioritizes own work, with scope of authority to respond to a multitude of maintenance department requests, and reporting requirements of NHC. This happens on a daily basis.
5 . Physical Demands
Indicate the nature of physical demands and the frequency and duration of occurrences leading to physical fatigue or physical stress.
Much time is spent in a sitting position with frequent opportunity to move about.
Doing inspections and assisting with troubleshooting may require the incumbent to experience extreme cold and having to enter crawlspaces or under houses.
Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
6. Environmental Conditions
Indicate the nature of adverse environmental conditions to which the jobholder is exposed, and the frequency and duration of exposures. Include conditions that increase the risk of accident, ill health, or physical discomfort.
Occasional exposure to unsanitary conditions, and potential health hazards.
Occasional working out in the cold.
Occasional working with hazardous materials.
Occasional dusty, unsanitary work environment.
7 . Sensory Demands
Indicate the nature of demands on the jobholder's senses. These demands can be in the form of making judgments to discern something through touch, smell, sight, and/or hearing. It may include concentrated levels of attention to details though one or more of the incumbents' senses.
Extensive use of a computer may lead to eyestrain and other physical discomforts.
Occasional working in areas where there is loud noises/sounds
Occasional coming in contact with hazardous materials.
Occasionally having to where PPE to overcome harmful effects of using machinery.
8 . Mental Demands
Indicate conditions within the job that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue that would increase the risk of such things as tension or anxiety.
Deadlines and working on many projects simultaneously may lead to stress.
The Housing Journeyman Plumber may encounter individuals who become belligerent and behave in a threatening manner; the ability to use persuasion and tact with a professional approach is required.
Resolving peoples' housing maintenance issues may become emotionally trying.
Working in an isolated, dark, cold environment, for some, can cause stress.
