The Health & Safety Specialist is accountable for developing, leading and administering the Health and Safety program across EPLS' multiple business units and locations in Nunavut and Manitoba. This involves developing policies, processes and procedures aligned with provincial/territory standards, ensuring safety-related training and compliance and supporting injury/accident prevention initiatives. Other duties include assisting with hazard identification, conducting audits and working with external agencies to support a safe environment for staff, contractors and customers. Travel to Nunavut on a quarterly basis will be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Promote a comprehensive and impactful safety culture through alignment and standardization of H&S practices across multiple sites in collaboration with operational leaders and staff
Act as the H&S subject matter expert, providing accurate and reliable advice and support to all divisions
Ensure policies, procedures and legal requirements are effectively implemented and followed
Identify, coordinate and/or deliver safety training (WHMIS, PPE, fall protection, confined space entry, lock-out/tag-out, equipment-specific training, First Aid/CPR etc.)
Maintain safety systems, SOPs, SDS sheets and training records/statistics
Keep safety software/portals up-to-date with the latest information and coordinate communications on safety topics
Lead and oversee workplace health & safety committees
Proactively conduct comprehensive safety audits and assessments to help identify potential hazards in the workplace
Lead emergency preparedness, hazard response and health surveillance programs
Assist with safety orientation for all new hires and contractors
Lead injury and incident investigations, work with leaders to review findings and develop corrective action plans
Oversee workers' compensation claims, return-to-work processes and health and safety investigations, including root cause analysis
In collaboration with operational leaders and HR, facilitate return to work and/or modified duty programs
Keep up to date with applicable H&S regulations/best practices and integrate changes into operations as required

Qualifications

Post secondary degree or diploma in OHS or a related field; Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is an asset
At least five years experience in a Health & Safety role
Knowledge of trades, construction, heavy equipment or warehouse/retail operations is an asset
Demonstrated ability to create and implement policies and programs that support safe workplaces
Skilled in developing, delivering and evaluating impactful H&S training programs for diverse audiences
Experience in planning, conducting and tracking H&S compliance audits and hazard assessments
Ability to establish and leverage positive relationships with key stakeholders
Strong computer skills, with experience in MS Office Suite
Good verbal and written communication skills
Adaptable, with the ability to handle multiple priorities under pressure
Strong business ethics and process orientation
Ability to travel to Nunavut quarterly
