Position: Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator

Status: Salaried, Less-Than-Full-Time

Primary Focus

CFP's Osoyoos packing facility receives fruit (including cherries, peaches, and apples) in bulk from Okanagan-based growers and sorts it for quality and size before packaging it for shipment to our domestic and international customers. Providing leadership and instruction in Occupational Health & Safety mitigates risk through programs and ensures compliance with all applicable occupational health and safety regulations, which are important aspects of ensuring the health and safety of our employees.

Job Context and Accountabilities

Work closely with CFP's management team and packing facility employees to help lead and deliver a strong health and safety culture
In conjunction with CFP's management team and Occupational Health & Safety team members within the Star Group, implement, maintain, and coordinate all health and safety policies and programs, including:

- employee orientation and training in safe work practices and procedures

- maintaining records of employee orientation, safe work instructions, procedures, and other related documentation

- participate in and lead the documentation of workplace incident investigations

- conduct regular observations of CFP's packing facility and communicate findings, feedback, and corrective actions to the management team

- maintain corrective action programs and follow-up to ensure compliance

- participate as a member of the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee

Facility lead for CFP's attainment of WorkSafeBC's Certificate of Recognition (COR)
Responsible for leading WorkSafeBC facility audits
Contribute to continuous improvement in systems and procedures
Completion of other responsibilities as assigned

Skills

Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) is preferred
Minimum 3-5 years of health and safety related experience is preferred
Communication skills (verbal, written, listening)
Leadership skills (including persuasion and persistence)
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn in-house software programs is preferred
Food Safety training is preferred
Experience conducting workplace audits and incident investigations is preferred
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training is preferred
Previous agriculture, produce, and/or food industry experience is an asset

Working conditions

Work is conducted indoors and outdoors at a fruit processing plant environment and can be subject to extreme temperature conditions. Plant operating hours are dependent on crop, production, and shipping needs, with extended hours through peak months (i.e. June through September). The majority of work is conducted during regular business hours from Monday to Friday. To meet the requirements of the business, there are times the work involves electronic correspondence and telephone calls after regular business hours and/or on weekends.
