Position Overview
The Mental Wellness Case (MWC) Manager provides support to individuals and families in the community who are living with challenges related to mental health, addictions, trauma, child welfare, or the justice system. Reporting to the Director of Health, the MWC Manager offers one-on-one and family support, makes referrals to services, and helps people connect with programs that meet their needs. This role also helps plan and run community programs and wellness events. The MWC Manager works with other service providers to make sure clients receive respectful, coordinated care and supports that reflect Mi'kmaq values.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet with individuals and families to provide support for mental health and/or substance use concerns
- Complete intake assessments and make referrals to detox, treatment programs, or mental health supports
- Provide one-on-one or group counselling sessions at the Health Centre or in homes (if appropriate and safe)
- Educate clients and families on available programs, supports, and resources
- Coordinate care with other services (e.g., legal aid, probation, social workers, schools, housing, etc.)
- Advocate for clients to ensure they are treated fairly and respectfully by service providers •
- Attend court or justice-related appointments with clients when needed
- Lead or support community workshops and healing circles
- Organize support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), parenting groups, or youth circles
- Help clients after treatment to ensure they stay connected to long-term supports
- Keep clear and confidential records for all client meetings and services
- Seek out funding opportunities for new mental wellness programs
- Work with communications staff to share wellness information and event details
- Other related duties as assigned by the Director of Health
Qualifications Education & Certification (any of the following)
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, Psychology, Addictions Counselling, Human Services, or a related field\
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant training and work experience
- Registration with a professional body (e.g., NS College of Social Workers) is an asset, but not required
- Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, or Trauma-Informed Practice training is an asset
Experience
- Experience supporting individuals or families with mental health, addiction, or trauma-related issues
- Lived experience with healing, recovery, or navigating systems is welcomed
- Familiarity with Mi'kmaq culture and experience working in First Nation communities is a strong asset
- Community-based work experience in health, wellness, or social services is helpful
Other Requirements
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
• Willing to complete a Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening) and Child Abuse Registry Check
• Willing to attend training and events outside of regular hours when needed
