General Manager

Miawpukek First Nation - Conne River, NL

Who we are

Miawpukek First Nation (MFN) is a vibrant Mi'kmaq community located at the mouth of the Conne River on the south coast of Newfoundland. At the heart of MFN is a strong sense of community, culture and connection, and a commitment to providing quality programs and services while continuing to build for the future.

We're looking for an experienced, community minded leader to join us as General Manager. This is a senior leadership role, reporting directly to Chief and Council and working closely with MFN's Directors and Managers. You'll have overall responsibility for the administration and operations of the organization. But just as importantly, you'll be part of a community where relationships matter and where the work you do has a very real impact.

What we're looking for

Leading with the Miawpukek First Nation means understanding both the organization and the community it serves. We're looking for someone who brings strong business and leadership experience, while recognizing that good leadership here is also built on relationships, trust and connection to community. You're someone who can see the big picture while still understanding what's happening on the ground. You're comfortable working with Chief and Council, supporting and challenging a leadership team, making difficult decisions when needed and building strong relationships along the way.

You also know how to actively listen, ask good questions, bring people together and move things forward. An understanding and appreciation of Mi'kmaq culture, traditions and values and experience working within First Nations or Indigenous communities would be a strong asset. Equally important is a genuine willingness to learn, build an understanding of the community and its culture and bring that understanding into how you lead and work with others.

What you'll be doing

As General Manager, you'll provide leadership and oversight across MFN's programs, services and administrative operations. That includes:

  • Working closely with Chief and Council to turn strategic priorities and decisions into action.
  • Leading, coaching and supporting MFN's Directors and Managers.
  • Overseeing financial planning, budgets, organizational resources, risk and performance.
  • Helping strengthen systems, accountability and organizational capacity.
  • Leading strategic and operational planning, policy development and continuous improvement.
  • Building a workplace culture that is respectful, collaborative and accountable.
  • Developing strong relationships with community members, governments, Indigenous organizations, funding partners and other stakeholders.
  • Identifying opportunities for funding, partnerships and development that support MFN's priorities and future growth.

What you bring

There are different paths that could prepare someone for this role, and we're open to hearing about yours. Ideally, you'll bring:

Significant progressive leadership experience, typically 10 years or more, including experience at a senior management or executive level.

Relevant post secondary education in business, public administration, finance, Indigenous governance, a technical discipline or a related area. A Masters or professional designation is an asset.

Experience working with elected leadership and an understanding of the different roles of governance and administration.

Strong financial, organizational and business judgment.

Experience leading people, navigating change and strengthening organizations.

The ability to communicate clearly, build trust and handle challenging situations with good judgment.

An understanding and appreciation of Mi'kmaq culture, traditions, values and community practices.

A valid driver's licence and flexibility to travel or work outside regular hours when needed.

Equivalent combinations of education, leadership experience and relevant community or professional experience will also be considered.

What we offer

MFN offers a competitive compensation package in accordance with its wage structure. Depending on the successful candidate's circumstances, additional allowances and/or relocation related supports may also be available.

Beyond compensation, this is an opportunity to take on a meaningful senior leadership role in a community with a strong identity, an important history and ambitious plans for its future.

If you're an experienced leader who values community, relationships, accountability and getting things done, we'd like to hear from you. Recruitment for this position will also reflect MFN's established hiring policies and its commitment to employment opportunities within the community.

Application deadline: October 30, 2026

Interested candidates are invited to submit a resume and cover letter through the platform where this position is advertised or by email to [email protected].
