Professional Standards Coordinator

Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) regulates the engineering and geoscience professions in the public interest in accordance with the NL Engineers & Geoscientists Act 2008 (Act), NL Engineers & Geoscientists Regulations 2024 (Regulations) and By-Laws.

With more than 5,000 individual and 600 corporate members throughout the province, and beyond, PEGNL is accountable to the public through the provincial Department of Government Services to ensure licensed, competent and ethical practice of the professions.

Reporting directly to the Director, Professional Standards, and supporting the Director, Legal Services, the Professional Standards Coordinator ensures legislative compliance, that members are practicing ethically and competently, and that professional standards and guidelines are developed and enforced.

Duties & Responsibilities

Specific duties of this role as required and directed by PEGNL include, but are not limited to:

Compliance

  • Conduct ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Document compliance actions and results in the compliance database and distribute compliance correspondence at the request of the Director, Legal Services.
  • Oversee the professional liability insurance renewal requirement processes for permits to practice, ensuring processes are followed and completed correctly, managing timelines and ensuring timely resolution and ensure permit holder compliance.
  • Respond to professional liability insurance renewal related enquiries.
  • Process permit to practice applications for review by the Director, Professional Standards.

Discipline & Enforcement

  • Provide support to the Director, Legal Services with complaints filed for unethical or incompetent practice.
  • Provide support to the Director, Legal Services with files referred to the Complaints Authorization Committee (CAC) and with files referred by the CAC to an adjudication tribunal.

Standards

  • Assist in the development of professional standards and guidelines.
  • Support the Director, Professional Standards promoting awareness of the Act, Regulations and By-Laws among members and act as a resource for Memorial University on professional practice.

Professional Development

  • Coordinate the PD program (including annual audit).
  • Research and develop regulatory learning modules.
  • Manage PEGNL's learning platform and suggest learning module additions and modifications.
  • Provide support to members on compliance with the requirements of PD reporting.
  • Manage equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives.

Administration

  • Champion the company's values.
  • Respond to general inquiries from members and the public, received via phone, email or in-person.
  • Assist members and permit holders with account enquiries.
  • Assist with the annual renewal process.
  • Prepare trademark confirmations and letters.
  • Approve and revoke digital seals.
  • Represent PEGNL on a national EDI committee.
  • Support the Director, Professional Standards and Director, Legal Services, with work for PEGNL Committees and National Groups.
  • Attend trade shows and other industry events.
  • Assist with the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Geoscience (P. Eng. or P. Geo.) designation preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Geoscience.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a legal or legislative environment would be an asset.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable dealing with members of the public.
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office preferred) and the ability to learn new software as required.
  • Ability to effectively work within a team and independently, to review and process sensitive material with complete confidentiality.
