Accountant/Data Analyst- Full-time, Permanent, Dartmouth, NS

St. John Ambulance NS/PEI, a charitable organization, dedicated to improving health and safety through first aid training, community support, and community-based volunteer programs is seeking an experienced Accountant/Data Analyst to support its financial reporting and data management in Nova Scotia and PEI.

St. John Ambulance is an international humanitarian organization and is a foundation of the Order of St. John. St. John Ambulance for Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island is currently seeking an experienced Accountant/Data Analyst to join our team in a full-time capacity.

The Accountant/Data Analyst is a key member in the Finance Department, providing hands on management of St. John Council for NS/PEI financial records, financial reporting, analysis and ad hoc reporting and supports the organizational goals through data analysis, interpretation, and reporting. This position ensures the security and accuracy of all physical and digital financial records.

The Accountant/Data Analyst is directly accountable to the Chief Financial Officer and supports the efforts of the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Management team.

This position carries a breadth of responsibilities, including finance, data analysis and reporting. Specifically, the position carries the following responsibilities:

  • Direct responsibility for the production and accuracy of monthly financial processing and reports.
  • Ensuring that reporting timelines are met on a consistent basis.
  • Ensuring that accurate and complete financial records are maintained.
  • Engage with and support a team of experienced accounting technicians
  • Prepare and post all journal entries prior to the month end cutoff.
  • Maintain integrity of and entries to Accounting software
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations for all investments, subledgers and general ledger accounts.
  • Assist with budget preparation through Gl data analysis and financial tending
  • Act as point reference for the annual audit.
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc data analysis, presenting same to various departments and Senior Management to ensure informed decision making.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policy through data review and analysis.

Where this position has a broad scope, crossing several functional areas, a wide range of skills is required. The successful candidate will possess the following attributes and skills:

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of Accounting systems, monthly preparation of financial records and financial reporting
  • Experience in a for-impact business is an asset.
  • Formal secondary education in accounting. A CPA is not required
  • A strong understanding of Canadian GAAP, general ledger structure, function and interaction through ledger entries.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills
  • Computer literacy is paramount as is a broad general understanding of accounting systems, Microsoft business programs, database management and advanced excel.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to and interact with team member of various capacities and management responsibilities
  • All candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada
