Position: Project Accountant (Construction)

Overview

Hanson Group of Companies is seeking a detail-oriented and operationally minded Project Accountant to support our growing construction operations. This role bridges accounting and project execution-ensuring accurate financial tracking of jobs while staying closely connected to what's happening in the field. This is not a traditional bookkeeping role. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of project accounting, WIP (Work in Progress), cost tracking, and contract administration, and will play a key role in aligning project activity with company financials.

Key Responsibilities

Project Accounting & WIP

• Maintain accurate WIP schedules and support monthly reporting
• Track project costs vs. budgets and identify variances
• Ensure proper revenue and cost recognition aligned with project progress
• Work closely with project managers to understand job status and financial implications
• Invoicing according to the terms of the project

Budgeting & Cost Control

• Monitor job budgets vs. actual costs (labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors)
• Flag cost overruns or risks early
• Assist in building and maintaining project cost structures and job setups
• Support forecasting of project outcomes

Payroll & Cost Allocations

• Allocate payroll costs to jobs/projects accurately
• Track and allocate equipment usage costs
• Allocate and reconcile subcontractor costs
• Ensure all costs are captured in the correct job and category

Contract Administration (Hybrid Component)

• Support tracking of contracts, change orders, and billing milestones
• Work with operations to ensure billing is aligned with contract terms
• Track committed costs vs. actuals
• Maintain organized documentation related to project financials

Financial Integration & Reporting

• Ensure project-level data ties accurately into the general ledger
• Support month-end close with project-based insights
• Assist in producing project profitability and margin analysis
• Help improve reporting processes and job costing accuracy

What We're Looking For

• Technical Skills
• 2-5+ years experience in construction accounting or project accounting
• Strong understanding of:
  • Work in Progress (WIP)
  • Job costing
  • Budget vs. actual tracking
  • Cost allocations (labour, equipment, subs)
• Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage, or similar)
