Senior Cloud Accountant
Tidal CFO Services · Full-Time · Remote (Atlantic Canada preferred)
About Tidal CFO
Tidal CFO is a remote-first, CPA-led fractional finance firm based in Atlantic Canada. We work with Canadian businesses - startups, nonprofits, and growing SMEs - to bring clarity, structure, and confidence to their finances.
We're not a traditional accounting firm. No timesheets, no billable-hour culture, no scramble to hit utilization targets. We run on a retainer model, which means you're measured by the quality and reliability of the books you produce - not the hours you clock. And here, bookkeeping isn't the bottom of the pile. Clean, accurate books are the foundation everything else is built on - our entire advisory and CFO practice is only as good as the numbers underneath it. We take that work seriously, and we're looking for someone who does too.
The Role
We're hiring an experienced Senior Cloud Accountant who genuinely enjoys full-cycle bookkeeping and wants to own it. You'll take full responsibility for a portfolio of client books in a modern, cloud-based environment - coding, reconciling, and closing each month to a standard you'd be proud to put your name on.
This is a hands-on seat for someone past the learning-the-ropes stage. You know QuickBooks Online and Xero cold, you've lived in Dext, and you can take a messy file and make it clean without someone looking over your shoulder. You'll have a Manager and a senior team around you for the complex calls - but the day-to-day is yours to run.
Because we're remote-first, you'll need to work independently, communicate proactively, and engage directly with clients - including picking up the phone when that's the fastest way to get an answer and keep work moving.
What You'll Do
- Own the books
- Take full ownership of full-cycle bookkeeping for your assigned clients in QBO or Xero
- Code transactions with professional judgment - prepaids, fixed assets, owner items, and non-business expenses handled correctly and consistently
- Keep workflows current so nothing sits idle without explanation, and flag anything that doesn't look right
- Reconcile with rigour
- Complete monthly bank and credit card reconciliations with minimal unexplained items at month-end
- Investigate discrepancies using logic, history, and independent research before escalating - and bring the steps you've already tried when you do
- Make the most of the tools
- Use Dext to manage receipts and source documents, keeping inboxes clear and organized
- Build and maintain supplier and bank rules to cut repetitive work - applying automation thoughtfully, with healthy professional skepticism
- Get the month closed
- Ensure reconciliations and supporting schedules are complete, documented, and audit-ready ahead of review
- Run a first-pass review of the P&L and Balance Sheet to catch obvious errors and anomalies before they reach a Senior or Manager
- Keep work moving and clients informed
- Manage your tasks in our practice management system and keep statuses current - stale statuses aren't a thing here
- Communicate directly with clients to request information, clarify transactions, and resolve open items - by phone or email, whatever gets it done
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping - ideally earned inside a cloud-based accounting or bookkeeping firm, managing a portfolio of clients at once. Firm-side cloud experience is what we're really after.
- Deep, hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online and Xero. This one isn't negotiable - you should be fast and confident in both.
- Strong Dext experience managing receipts and document workflows. Bonus points for building rules and automations that actually stick.
- Someone who likes the craft of clean books - you find satisfaction in a tidy reconciliation, not just in getting it off your plate
- A remote self-starter who manages multiple clients and priorities with minimal supervision
- A confident communicator who's comfortable engaging clients directly and picking up the phone when needed
- Bilingual (English / French) is a strong asset - not required
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with at times conflicting priorities
What This Isn't
This isn't a data-entry seat. You own the file and exercise judgment - we're not handing you a coding sheet to follow.
It's also not a CFO or advisory role. You'll see how clean books feed the advisory work we do, and there's room to grow toward it over time - but this seat is about doing the bookkeeping exceptionally well.
And it isn't unsupported. You'll work inside a structured system with documented processes, modern tools, and a team to escalate to when a call is above your line.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation aligned with experience
- Comprehensive health benefits
- Fully remote - work from wherever you do your best work
- A modern, best-in-class cloud stack and documented processes - no chasing down information
- A small, high-trust team where your work is visible and genuinely valued
- Room to grow as the firm scales
