Mind Your Food is a program of Right to Food delivered in partnership with Community Food Centres and Good Food Organizations located across the country. It is designed to promote well-being amongst youth (13 to 19 years old).
Working in close collaboration with CFCC, Mind Your Food partners will play a critical role in the continued improvement and refinement of this program.
We are looking for a highly motivated person to join the team at Natoaganeg Community Food Centre as the Mind Your Food facilitator. This person will be primarily responsible for the planning and delivery of the Mind Your Food program and will also frequently communicate with the Mind Your Food team at Right to Food.
The ideal candidate should be very comfortable working with youth (13 to 19 years old), have experience facilitating group programs related to cooking, nutrition and/or culture, be interested in land-based learning, and be comfortable with basic Microsoft Office and computer skills.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the Mind Your Food facilitator training provided by Right to Food
- Recruit and intake Mind Your Food participants
- Coordinate and deliver Mind Your Food, a program for youth that explores nutrition, food traditions and food justice through hands-on learning. While working from a shared framework, the facilitator will be responsible for making adaptations to Mind Your Food based on the context (e.g., location, season, etc.) in which it's delivered
- Designs and plans programs that reflect community needs as determined by community consultations, ensuring programs are developed to align with core Mi'kmag values, and that traditional food access and education is prioritized within the food centre model
- Recruit and manage program volunteers and youth advisors
- Seek out suitable community partners to support program delivery (e.g., chefs, land-based practitioners, etc.)
- Foster a supportive, non-judgmental, engaging, and comfortable environment where youth feel valued and meaningful relationships among youth participants are likely to emerge
- Regularly connect with the Mind Your Food team (comprised of staff from Right to Food and staff from other organizations located across Canada) to contribute to program development, refinement and improvement based on your experience and participant feedback
- Support program evaluation and reporting requirements as stipulated by the project funder
- Participate in knowledge sharing activities (e.g., meetings, webinars, trainings) if/as requested
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience working with youth, preferably in the delivery of community-based programs or in another educational setting
- 2+ years of experience facilitating programs related to cooking, nutrition and/or land-based learning
- Solid understanding of Mi'kmaq culture, values, traditions (and traditional foods), territory and socioeconomic conditions
- Comfortability with program planning and execution
- Comfortability planning and preparing meals with youth participants (i.e. knowledge of food safety, ability to demonstrate food skills, competency adapting and scaling recipes, etc.); spending time outdoors in all seasons; and managing outings for a group of 8 to 10 youth
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and leadership skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and build partnerships with like-minded organizations and/or other stakeholders
- Knowledge of community-based food programs and understanding of food sovereignty/ hunger/poverty/food system issues
- Understanding of and interest in the links between food, culture, community connection and well-being
- Basic Microsoft Office and computer skills
- Experience living/working in Natoaganeg First Nation considered an asset
- Ability to speak Mi'kmag would be an asset
Hours of Work: 45 hours biweekly (3 days per week), normally 1pm-7pm with occasional programming on evenings or weekends.
Status: Part-time term
Term: One year
