Join the Bridge to Publishing (B2P) team at the Ulnooweg Education Centre. In partnership with Nimbus Publishing Ltd and several other Atlantic Canadian publishing firms, Bridge to Publishing (B2P): Reclaiming the Indigenous Narrative of Atlantic Canada is a professional development pilot program designed to directly address systemic barriers that either discourage or prevent Indigenous youth from working in, and with, the region's publishing sector. Grounded in OCAP® and Etuaptmumk principles, this strategy will be governed by an Indigenous-led Steering Committee through Ulnooweg.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for Indigenous youth engagement, empowerment, leadership, and storytelling, as well as expertise in marketing, public relations, and intercultural communication.
As part of the selection process, we strive to find a candidate who is dedicated to delivering all programs with a positive attitude and a passion for continuous learning through partnership, collaboration, and knowledge building with Indigenous communities and Knowledge Navigators.
The Engagement Mentor will be responsible for:
- Building and nurturing media and the general public's engagement with the Bridge to Publishing (B2P) program through multiple media channels. Some examples could include drafting and sending media advisories and press releases; creating and posting social media content; and so on.
- Networking and building a virtual, connected youth community of Indigenous and allied youth. across the area of Mi'kma'ki and beyond, in what's known present-day as Atlantic Canada. Supporting youth engagement efforts across this region, and in particular, the engagement efforts of Indigenous youth.
- Supporting the initial onboarding of B2P youth participants and moving on to network and monitor the participants' ongoing progress and successes.
- Actively respecting, applying, and upholding OCAP® and Etuaptmumk principles.
- Mentoring, ensuring, and securing a safe, inclusive atmosphere and sense of belonging for all.
The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate:
- Post-secondary education in PR and/or Communications and 2 years' working in a program coordination, community or public engagement role, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working with diverse knowledge systems grounded in the Mi'kmaw understanding of Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing).
- Experience with Indigenous organizations, communities and/or youth serving groups and knowledge holders.
- Proven experience leading/mentoring/working with youth.
- Social media/content creation experience (work examples available on request).
- Effective and clear written and verbal communication skills.
- High organization with time management, decision making, problem solving, critical and creative thinking skills.
- An ability to work remotely, autonomously, and asynchronistically.
- Vulnerable sector check and proof of two COVID-19 vaccinations.
